Two different colors.
Mag Red 1 has more attractive red blush, almost a maroon.
Mag Red II has more pink tint in the red.

That can't be, I stated what my color name is from my window sticker.
MAGNETIC RED MET w/TINT COAT. (I'm capitalizing as that is the way it is on the window sticker.)
If one dropped off the w/TINT COAT it would be MAGNETIC RED MET so it would have to be after '01.
It was a $600. option for this paint.
Ah got off my rear end and looked it up in my Corvette Black Book
thru 02 it is Magnetic Red, no Magnetic Red for 03 only Torch Red and Anniversary Red, then in 04 it shows up Magnetic Red II. But in '05 they dropped the II off again and it is back to Magnetic Red for the first year of C6.
Interestingly, the color code never changes whether it's plain ole Magnetic Red or Magnetic Red II both are 86.
So it appears that this is just a marketing branding name change. The color is the same for the entire run. I say this because of the color code.
In '06-07 it is now Monterey Red. Paint code 80.

As far as color goes it's using the same code through 04 so I would think there is no difference, just a marketing name change. Be interested to see MR '02 next to a MR '04, bet it's the same.

Mag Red II is much more "metallic", and the color is lighter than Mag Red.
Plus, as us obnoxious Mag Red II owners like to say -- "Mag Red II, the only color that matters"...

BTW the 98 above listed as Mag Red in your profile, check your code again (53) as there was no Mag Red for '98. Yours would be Light Carmine Red.

My 04 Vert is Mag Red II. I think it relates more to the old Candy Apple Red used on hot rods. It REALLY changes shades/hue depending on time of day, light etc.

So does my 01 (Mag Red), I believe that effect comes from the "w/TINT COAT" which is the tinted clear coat same as the technique they used on the Anniversary Red, that is putting color into the clear. (Yes I know Anniversary Red is a three stage paint also.)
In some light conditions it can look flat dark red, others vibrant red with lots of metallic, and then other light like you said candy apple but yes almost a pinkish vibrant red.
I'm interested now in verifying what the different year model paint codes actually are because in most of the official documents it's all 86. I realize I'm repeating but if the paint code didn't change how can it be any different? I believe people are just being sucked in by a change in marketing name. GM has done this before with other options. Remember that the name Magnetic Red II only occurred in '04 which is it's last year in the C5, first appearance in C6 which was in '05 and again marketing dropped the "II" from the name. In '06 they ended it's life.
