why do we have an air bridge?
Today's saturday morning question is :
Why do we have an air bridge? The pancake like "bridge" between the throttle body and MAF.
Why isnt there just a straight pipe from the air intake ( mine is a Vararam ) right to the throttle body.
I see forced air systems dont have that. Do our motors want a pool of excess air to draw from ?

Yes, this is correct. The FI guys most likely have a high rise hood or a lowered radiator.

makes you wonder if that is the correct answer.
I cant see GM putting the car together and all of a sudden "crap the hood wont fit now "

What do you expect GM to do, change the shape of the hood? Give us a smaller radiator? Lower the radiator so it crashes into objects on the ground? I really doubt the bridge is killing our power.

I think the bridge is flattened like that to keep a constant cross sectional area while still clearing the hood.

On a Forced Induction application, the radiator and AC condensor are "laid down" (raked at a much sharper angle) to allow clearance of 4inch charge tubes. On a stock C5, the radiator and AC are almost straight upright in comparison - so they need the flattened air bridge to clear the hood.
