Default Picture down the cam sensor hole, please help!

After receiving a P0343 CMP Sensor Circuit High Voltage I decided to check the sensor before I tore into the engine to check the cam bolts. I took the picture below after I took the cam sensor out.

As you can see in the pictures, there looks to be something dead center in the hole. Is that the cam reluctor wheel that the sensor uses right where it should be or something else? From what I’ve read, the reluctor would be displaced in the case of loose cam bolts. I’m not sure what the reluctor wheel looks like on the cam so what do you think?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hard to tell from that pic, but if it helps you at all, here is the end of the cam in various points of rotation:

Thanks for the pics

This is the area I see looking down the hole. I have continuously had the code show up over the last 10 times I have ran the car.

The cam looks to be right where it should be

As you can see in Y2K's pics, the wheel is a part of the cam.
If you'd like, I can slip a cam into a bare block I have and take a pic down the hole in the AM. Let me know.

The cam retaining bolts keep the cam from sliding out of the front of the block. The bolts that hold the timing chain sprocket to the cam keeps it from sliding inwards.

If either set of screws were to loosen, it would allow the cam to walk one way or the other, and if the sensor ring on the cam becomes off-center, the magnetic sensor won't read it correctly, throw a code, and be the first evidence of the problem.

Has this sensor been replaced?

I haven't replaced the sensor yet, I'm still trying to figure out what to do next. The ridge that is show in my pic is right in the center of the hole. The second ridge (toward the rear of the cam) shown in Y2Kvert4me pics is slightly off center. Should the 2 ridges split the difference for center?

madeouttaglass if you could take a picture with the cam in the correct position would help greatly.

Thanks

You can say that again! I would have never made Carlisle last year if Stephen hadn't come to my rescue.

Here's to you, Stephen.

FWIW- the groove between the ramps looks like it's in the center.

To me it looks like my cam is just a tad to the rear when compaired. It is really hard to tell though.

Anyone else have a better picture?

Do you think it could just be a bad sensor? How often do they go bad? EG - You rock!

That is a good question. I haven't heard of anyone finding one bad.

I'm thinking that I should open the engine up just to be sure that the bolts aren't loose, it would help me sleep at night. Besides, the bolts are bound to come loose at some point. I even gave Andy a call today to talk about a blower cam and 918 springs to compliment his Vortech kit. He just had 2 cars in the shop with the cam bolts loose.

Lets see, do I really need to get over the 600 RWHP mark
