I have just spent last 10 min. reading this entire thread and now I know I won't be able to sleep tonight. I just bought 03 6-spd this past weekend with 31K miles. Will I be having all these steering lock problems with the 03. Most of your comments seem to come from guys with older C5's. Am I on a ticking time bomb? Should I be putting in CLB now?

ck with a dealer to see if any of the recalls have been done on your car. if they hav'nt, get the CLB install it and forget about it. if they have then the fun begins.
I had to get a new computer due to an unrelated issue. Before I could have my custom tune installed, I had to put the new computer in the car, and the dealer flashed the pcm to my car. Then I had my custom tune installed. Since the dealer flashed the pcm, does it mean I have all recalls installed too?
I love this car to no end, but simply can not nor will not put up with things that can not be explained, nor, seemingly fixed for good by the manufactuer of the car. Christ, it's not a fricking Cavalier, it's GM's most prized stable stud and they abandon you like you have the plague if it's out of it's 'grace' period.
, but in my past experience nobody on here wants to hear that.
Found out mine had the "fix" done, and it's acting up again. (no surprise).
So, here's what I've gathered from this thread. I can send Chuck my PCM, he can undo the GM "fixes", then order a CLB and install, and the issue will be resolved? Can it be this simple?? Please say yes.
PS now I know why C5 drivers give the wave,, it's because we all know how much we are getting bent over and we just want to say.... I feel your pain.
is'nt this fun. it's like leaving your car at a mental hospital. everybody tells you we'll take care of it, but there all crazy.
I am crazy because they made me crazy!! I am not responsible. I was raised in a bad home! I did not get enough t.v. time! My momma hated me? I bought a Corvette and expected it to run like a banshee on cheap gas and low insurance and cost nothing to maintain?
These cars make us all crazy until we sit behind that wheel and fire up the beast and listen to the music of those rumbling exhaust notes. Then, like taking good drugs or one of those 'don't give a dang' shots the dentists use, we are SANE...if only for a while...and, all is peaceful in the universe.

AMEN! it's a terrible trade off, but thats the way all great things are, a brake job on an enzo ferrari is $30,000.
For new C-5 MN6 owners who don't know whether their car has been messed with by the dealer or has a CLB that was installed by a previous owner simply do the following test.
Get in your car but do not insert your ignition key.
Grip the steering wheel with both hands and attempt to turn it back and forth a few inches. If your car has a CLB or has had the latest recall which started in Feb of last year the steering wheel will turn. If your wheel will not turn then you will know that last years recall was never performed as they would have removed the locking plate at that time. Next, get someone to run the vin of your car through your local dealer to get a service history printout. They will generally do this at no charge. It will tell you if there are any outstanding recalls on your car. I strongly recommend that you not allow them to do the recall on your car unless you can get them to only remove the locking plate without reflashing your computer. There is absolutely no reason for them to reflash the computer as that was a carryover from the previous recall when they reflashed MN6 computers to cover their own liability by shutting down your fuel supply in case of column locking.
It was only after I and many others here on the forum contacted the NTSB demanding a meaningful recall on our MN6's and informed the NTSB of the dangerous nature of the problem. The NTSB apparently issued GM a one time waiver of the requirement for all vehicles since 1968 to have locking steering columns and/or locking gear shifters.
Good luck on solving your problem! I prevented mine by installing a CLB a few weeks after I bought my car in 2004. I still have several recall notices stacked on my desk. Also, if you take your car in for service or warranty work be sure to tell them that the recall is not to be performed on your car. I had to sign a release but at least I avoided the dreaded recall problems. If you do not tell them and have them write a no recall order for service tech there is a good chance they will do the recall on your car without your knowledge or consent.
ok, here's my story...I have a 99 MN6 w / 22K and when I bought it it already had the reflash recall done. When the latest recall that removed the locking plate on the MN6 came out I got it done at the local dealer in September.. Within days I started to get the "pull key ,wait 10 sec" msg. Back to the dealer. Because it isn't actually a code they checked it but everything seemed fine. After about 6 weeks I started it and got the service column lock message and the car had to be flatbedded to the dealership. They put in another wiring harness and relay. It was ok for another 6 weeks. Same thing. Another new harness and relay and a new actuator. After another month, it died again. This time after they took it, I called Chevrolet and asked for help. They called the dealership and the dealership says that Chevy told them about a service bulletin that they were unaware of that said that all the relays that they had been installing were bad and to remove it. They did and so far it's been ok. However, shortly after, I put the car in storage for the winter and haven't done much but start it since. April 1 it goes back on the road and we'll see if the fix holds. The good news is they haven't charged me a penny and sincerely were trying to resolve the problem as well as they could.
The mechanic who works on my car owns a Vette himself and has been having the same problems. , Hopefully the combination of no locking plate, new actuator and no relay will work. We'll see.
I wish at this point that I had installed a CLB and not opened this can of worms but I thought that this last recall was pretty much like a CLB bc it included a new harness and relay. Why can't Chevy engineers just copy what the CLB harness does? I guess this is one of the prices we pay for having technologically sophisticated cars.
Sigh of relief. I just went out to the garage and tested the column lock on my new (to me) 03 6sp. The wheel locked up, so that means the recall was not done. So now I figure out how to order and install a CLB and stay away from the chevy dealership. Thanks guys for the info
