I have been a member of this forum since I purchased my car back in '02. Maybe I'm just in a bad mood today, but two things about the posts lately have really ticked me off.
1) In the "for sale / wanted section", where do all these people get off looking for a Corvette that cost $50 - $55K a few years ago for $20K? And then they want no miles, perfect condition and are picky about the car! WTF? Are these people nuts? Go buy a mustang!!! (Not that a Mustang is a bad car, it is just less expensive). All these people are just hurting the resale value of the classic american sports car. Don't sell out - hold onto them.
2)The age old "must be a stick". Are you a freakin' race car driver? I highly doubt it. If you want to go fast in a straight line - automatic. If you are road racing - stick (if you know how to shift).
....J/K w/you bro... Lighten up, ppl are always gonna ask stupid questions and then again, their almost always gonna get "stupid" answers...
That's the great thing about this forum. People can feel free to ask whatever they want. I know I probably asked some pretty stupid questions before, but I learned from them and that's what we're here for, to learn from each other more about the cars we love!
The people asking for a c5 for 18K are just testing the market. If someone wants to sell at that price, that's the market value.
On the flip side, nobody ever walks into a chevy dealer and says, "I want to pay $5000 Over MSRP -- I'm all about maintaining the prestige of Corvette!"
Everyone already KNOWS Automatics are superior!
As far as the price, you'll be amazed at what some people will sell their cars for..I have a Friend that was "MR. CORVETTE" a year or two ago...even went so far as to have the C5 emblem tattooed across his back...THEN, suddenly out of nowhere, he sold BOTH the C5 and the C4..and then bought a Z-71 Chevy PICKUP...a freaking PICKUP! He let them both go cheap too...I guess if you are wanting out of something you'll take what anyone offers if you want out bad enough...I saw a 1998 C5 with 52k mileage sell for $12,500, the guy was getting divorced and did'nt want the wife getting it..Go figure!

Don't kid yourself, the dealers and auction sites (their buyers) determine the market value of all cars including our C5's. If the dealers were offering more $$$ on trade-in and selling them for more $$$, then it would carry over into the private market. And the dealers, even though they'd like to, don't set the market either, used car buyers set the market. If the dealers could sell used cars for more, they would.

Well, my car cost $42,000 new, I paid $20,000 for it used, it has low miles, and is in perfect condition. I don't think I'm nuts.

Althought I fully agree and sympathise with you on the first item, what do you mean by the second one (must be a stick)?
I am certainly not a race car driver, but rather an amateur drag racer on the weekends.
That said, i NEVER would have bought an automatic Corvette, unless perhaps it had the F1-style manu-matic transmission with 0.2 second shifts, and full rev-matching. But that's not an auto anyway, it's a mechanically-automated manual transmission.
There is an old saying, it never hurts to ask. What is the worst that can happen? Someone you don't know will be offended because you low balled a "I want a XXXX Coupe/Vert/Z06 - whatever for $xx,xxx" thread. We all would like more than we got for less than we paid. It is human nature. If perchance someone needs to move their pride and joy in a hurry and is willing to take the lowball number - it's their business. It may just be an attempt to start the negotiation. Most car buyers I know offer a lesser amount than the stated price to start with - I sort of feel bad when I sell something if the person doesn't counter offer, because I, like most sellers, usually start a little higher than my bottom dollar. Shoot sometimes, even I don't know what my bottom dollar is, I may get tired of it sitting around and want it gone (at a reasonable price). Life is too short to let things like this get under your skin, if it bugs you, don't bother reading them, just move on to another thread.

I completely disagree. The C5 market has been in the buyers favor for the last 6 months which means we "dictate" the private sale market. If a single owner lists his car for a "sentimental" price, it just won't sell and he will be forced to keep it or lower the price.
To their advantage, the buyers have the fall/winter months, the C6, and the car is simply decreasing in value every year (although FRC's are holding up nice). Personally I am looking for a low mileage mn6 2000+ coupe and I won't be spending more than low 20's. My problem is I'm in NJ but its a realistic goal. We'll see what happens this coming spring/summer; I might be biting my tongue!
Even though these are dealer wholesale prices, this should give you a general idea of where the market is in that part of the spectrum.
I purchased by '00 FRC a few years ago for a reasonable price. I sold my '94 at the same time faily cheap to a friend who really want a vette. It all depends on who is selling/buying.
My '94 was an auto, my FRC is a stick. I love the stick because I don't have to drive the car every day. My Tahoe is an auto (of course) and my '72 Coupe is also an auto.
I have no doubt that an auto is faster in a straight line, no way I can shift that fast. The auto is also easier on the driveline. When I was younger I converted a 66 Chevelle from a 3spd to a 4spd, then to an Auto. The auto was the fastest. But I tell my wife (who can't drive a stick) that having an auto corvette is like kissing your sister.
That's why the make different flavors of ice cream!!!!!!
Its really not about what is faster or what its used for (strip, daily commute, weekends), it is simply what is more "respected" in the sports car world. And that answer is simple.
I understand what your saying. The way I look at it, if a Corvette deserves a high dollar, it will indeed get it. I Had a '98 and sold it for well above average due to being able to eat off the car in and out. I keep my cars in pristine condition and there are plenty of buyers that will recognize and pay for my labor of love. As for the automatic vs. manual deal..... I've owned both, liked both
