I'm looking for help with my garage floor. Has anybody out there done a floor paint or coating. What was involved, was it pretty simple? Did you use a product from an auto parts store etc....Pics would be cool also.
I saw a few in the garage thread the other day. Made the mistake of showing the wife, now you know what I have to do.....
I painted my garage floor about 4 weeks ago. I used the two part epoxy garage floor paint from Home Depot. It is made by Rustoleum. It was pretty simple to do. I just followed the directions on the kit. The kit comes with everything that you need except for the roller. I had my wife spread the flakes while I rolled the floor. I am very happy with the results.

Perfect, that's the kit that I'm looking at. Kragen Auto Parts (might by Checkers where you are) has the kit for $50. I'll need 3 of them. Thanks.
I have done & re-done my shop 24x40 with rust-o-leum. Still pealing and cracking. If I had it to do again, I would look into a commercial type epoxy coating.

Just my $.02 hope it helps!
My friend had the same result with the epoxy. He even had to acid etch the floor first and then rinse it with a baking soda wash. Too many steps for me. Consequently, I am going to carpet the floor with a new indoor outdoor product. It will really look great when I get it done. I plan to cut 2 foot squares and do a checkerboard design with a C5 logo cut in the middle of the vette stall. Pics when it is finished (If I get to it this spring)

Same here, I prepped the floor as good as I could and it did not hold.

I also have this problem with mine, Only toward the front of the garage. This floor isnt very durable as hot tires sitting on them, dragging stuff etc. I would also suggest a commercial professional install, then you have a warranty and dont have to do it twice.
I want to redo my floor, but I have to get all the epoxy off mine first before I can have it redone. Talk about wasted money.

I'm having my garage done next month - as soon as my current project gets finished up. I thought about all of the options....Race Deck, carpeting, paining it myself, etc...
I came across these folks at Barrett-Jackson. My buddy has had his done by them and all I can say is that it's awesome. He drives his 40' motorhome across this floor without an issue. They are professionals and it's all they do. They are located all over the country and they stand behind their work.
My problems are the same as everyone else - time, experience, residential quality do it yourself products.....

Commercial two-part epoxy...I think it was from MAB. Kinda pricey, but almost six years later, my 3 car garage floor still looks brand new. I opened a custom motorcycle shop seven years ago and used the same stuff on the shop floor. Lots of traffic, lifts, tool boxes rolling around, gas, oil, etc, six days a week, and it is just now starting to show some wear around the mechanic stations. If done right, it lasts for a long, long time. Proper prep work is essential.

This is very common, there are many issues with painting concrete. first u have to make sure the surface is prepped. this often requires an acid etch. in cases where contractors place concrete with a high water cement ratio, it makes it very difficult. If the surface is hard steel trowelled, u must etch and possibly scarify the surface using a black pad on a buffing machine. Secondly underlying moisture may present a problem. A floor that retains moisture or collects condensation will be a night mare.
I suggest chemical staining the concrete using a product by lm scofield, qc colors, or similar. then use a high quality clear acrylic or urethane over top. it is a time consuming process. if you want a painted on look, try going to Marjam supply. they have a very vast array of sealers and coatings. I think their website is www.marjam.com. There are a lot of options, and different solutions may require different prep work. If you decide to go with an chemical stain, you DO NOT want to acid etch the floor first, but you still have to prep it. its really no different than painting wood or metal.
I had my floor painted last summer by a friend that has been in the business of doing floors for over 30 years. First and formost you need a vapor barrier under the cement to stop water from coming up through the floor, he was insistant about it. Next you need to have the surface preped by shot blasting it, it's self defeating to wash it with an acid as you then need to wash it off, which just puts more water in the cement. Next you want to put an epoxy base primer down the use a quality two part epoxy color coat. If decals are to be used then this is the time to apply them and if you are going to want something to help keep the floor from being to slippery and it now before you give it a final coat of Urethane. Do it this way and it will last for years. It's very time consuming and expensive to do it the right way but well worth it.
