Default Trouble with M12 Trans--questions

Just now after some spirted driving (finally--had this car 5 months and it's really never been warm enough)--but with careful shifting (I know the fork is aluminum--it's an '02 Z)--I can't get the gear shifter out of 4th gear.

I checked the clutch fluid again and it's not bad, not as clear as it was though--I just bought the syringe to change it the other day--haven't made time to do the change.

So question: 1) Is there any trick to getting it back into N so I can drive home? I am just allowing it too cool 2) The clutch pedal is working fine--it doesn't grind in gear--is this typical of "sticky clutch"?
I would call this "sticky gear shift" and I had it happen once before when I parked the car, but it came out of gear. Always 4th gear.

Thanks

I had a similar problem a few years back in my last Z. It ended up being stuck in 3rd. Turns out it was the "pin" that goes into the front of the shifter itself. Had to pull the shifter out, put the pin back in and it was good to go. Hopefully your issue is that easy!

Well--I hope so too--except that means a tow because I am not inclined to work on it in the middle of a parking lot for all to see.

Working under the car in the middle of a parking lot gets a lot of sympathy and a few cold softdrink offers.

It's possibly a broken shift fork in the tranny. The 01, 02, and half of the 03's used aluminum shift forks which often bend or break. If this is the case you'll have to pull the tranny and have it rebuilt. I'm currently going through this on my 02. This is so common I can't believe GM didn't do a recall. I hope I'm wrong in your case though, not fun.

Do you know when the 03's got the steel forks? I am curious because I have an '03...

From what I have read, If built in April 2003, you have steel forks.

This eliminates most of the '03's (from being safe!!). That is why I went with the '02--didn't find too many late '03's and '04's were too much.

Thanks for all the help--I will let you know what happens--I will get it to a shop this week. All indications here are that a rebuild is needed. I'm pretty upset as this is only at 15,000 miles and I only put on 1,000 of those, and they were pretty mild.

I've heard this WAY too often. Can you give us an idea of the cost (since most of us should probably start saving!)

About $1,200 for the upgrade parts and rebuild of the tranny, that's if all the gears are OK. That does not including labor to pull the tranny and put it back in if you're having a shop do that. No wonder GM won't do a recall, they'd loose too much money

Wow, so you're probably looking at $2200 including labor (plus or minus). Sheesh......

t56rebuilds.com quoted me $1279 which included shipping both ways. And a local shop to my area, Kirkland Transmissions, quoted me $1,200.

I just did this. I ordered up a Stage IV transmission from RPM Transmissions to the tune of $1845. Did the swap with the help of some friends. Took the significant portion of a weekend to do.

Or pay a shop their hourly rate for 8 hours or whatever it is.
