I use a 50/50 mix of SG and spray everything, let it sit for 5-10 minutes and then hose it off. I just try not to spray directly on all the electrical components. Works for me!
You may want to ask this of the folks over in the Car Care Discussion section of the Forum. Several very knowledgeable people and a few professional detailers hang out in that section. Also, what type car does your wife have? (Your profile only shows you have a C4.) Knowing this might help them to better answer some of your questions.
Here are a few of the more recent threads on this topic from that section of the Forum:

Sorry GreyC5. Most people know us. Yes my profile is a C4, my wifes car is a 99 C5 coupe. We just got it last fall and it was in the shop for a paint job over the winter. Now it's time to clean her up.
Thanks for the links. I will do the reading and ask any additional questions over there.

I use SG straight, and spritz the dirty parts only. then I take the hose and let the water just kind of run on those areas, at a trickle. When done - I break out the compressor and blow dry the whole engine compartment, paying special attention to the electrical connections.
Then I start it up and let the engine heat evaporate whatever I didn't dry. I wipe it down with Meguiars #40 (Vinyl and Rubber treatment), and it looks great!

Thanks Randy. Engine is looking good... Good info. I'm at a base level with Lori's.

Thanks Cozmo. Stay away from the battery with water... Actually I pulled the battery last night to get a new one and I saw what look like a electronic component under it. Was wondering what that was... Thanks.
