Default Oil questions

Hi, I just bought a new 2001 Z06 on 10/5 and have a few questions about changing the oil. Before I get started here's how the first 900 miles were put on the car: Car had 22 miles on it when I picked it up. I put 800 highway miles on it that weekend. I followed standard procedure on break-in by varying engine speeds and I kept the speeds at around 60 MPH. The last 100 miles or so have been in town with just a few short burst of WOT.
(1) After 900 miles I had to add 8/10 quart of oil...is this normal?
(2) How many miles should I drive it before I change it? The dealer said 3,000 miles.
(3) Can someone tell me the torque specs of the oil filter & drain plug?

Thanks in advance for any help,
Dan

Dan,

If you only used 8/10 qt of oil, that may be good. Some of the '01's, and especially those with the M6, have an oil consumption problem and use 1 qt every 300 to 600 miles. It would be too early to tell about your engine, but I would feel good with the amount of oil use you mentioned.
I would change it now. Even the guys at GM Power Train recommend the first change at 1K miles due to accumlated metal particles and the engine assembly lub restricting the oil filter. Many have reported much higher oil pressure after the first oil change, likely due to partially plugged oil filter.
I don't know the torque. On the filter, I do tighten mine very snugly by griping it with a shop towel. I don't think you could overtighten it this way. And just get the drain plug good and snug. If you are concerned about over tightening, just grip the wrench somewhat close to the plug, this way you will have less leverage.

Bruce

I agree, change it now and don't forget about a magnetic drain plug for insurance.

Thanks guys for the help. I'm going to change my oil this week. I'm going to find out the torque specs and post them later. I'm a little meticulous that way.
:D

Later,
Dan

Actually, the torque specs are pretty important with the aluminum pan and all. Did I use a torque wrench to tighten my plug two weeks ago when I changed the oil? No. And I did the oil change at 5500 miles...my car is leased. You probably don't want it when I give it back. Anyway, for some reason something like 22-27 ft pounds sticks in my head as the plug spec. The filter should be a quarter turn after the gasket contacts. I do have some consumption, but as the miles add up, the consumption seems to have gone down. I WILL break my next vette in on dino oil.

I'd suggest changing the oil and fliter at around 1000 miles and again at 3000 or so.

As to torque spec, the oil drain plug should be 18 ft-lbs and the oil filter should be 22 ft-lbs.
