Soon I will be moving from Ohio to Oklahoma. I'm going to be renting a U-Haul to move my stuff. I need a way to get my vette out there too. I'm thinking of renting a U-Haul car tailer and towing the vette behind the truck. Any thoughts or suggestions on how to do this or even if its a good idea?
1. Length of trailer ramps. If not long enough you may not be able to get the car on the trailer without scrapping the front fascia on the ramps. Don't worry about the spoiler since it is meant to hit the ground.
2. Trailer fender height. If the fender is too high you will not be able to open the drivers door. This can be handled by using a 2 x 8 x10 or 12 in the left side trailer ramp to lift the left side of the car.
3. Get yourself some T Hooks from some place like AW Direct. They fit in the shipping slots in the frame and let you attach your tie down straps properly.
4. Inspect the trailer before you take it off the lot. A lot of U Haul equipment has been abused over the years and they don't do a lot of maintenance on the equipment. Things to check are stop, turn and trailer lights for proper operation when hooked up to your tow vehicle.
U-haul rents a trailer which has a drop down left fender so you can open your drivers side door. When I had my Trans-Am I used one to tow it on. Be sure and cover or tape the front of the vette.
I had considered using a transport company. FedEx wants a little more than a thousand to do the haul for me. I can do it myself for about 300. I could probably get a one way plane ticket from OK to OH for about the same but then I'd have a 2 day drive ahead of me. Not that a 2 day drive in the vette would be a bad thing. Still, towing it seems like the most practical solution.

Back in '98 I did the OKC from Arkron, Oh. I did the U-Haul 3 bedroom box pulling the '95 behind. They do have a car hauler that the wheel fender pulls down to let you open the door and it worked quite well. I don't think a C5 would be much different so check it out. I was glad I could bring my car with me instead of waiting for delivery..Hell I drove it to get burgers the night we got there!

Just take some resonable precautions and you should be fine
Drive your Vette and fly back. The drive will be a fun experience in the stress of a major move. I own a truck rental agency and my advise is don't run the risk of damage to your Vette.
I just pulled my '00 vert back from Fl to TX and i rented a uhaul. I am a very picky person when it come to my cars and i had a lot of doubts about pulling it back. But i have to say id do it again if i had too. Youll have to find a slight elevation difference to drive the car onto the trailer to make clearance. Also youll have to back it on the trailer cause the tires have a certain groove they need to go into. The nose of the car will hit the front of trailer if driven on forward. What i likes about it was the straps, the fitted over the tires so you dont have to chain or strap anythign to the car itself. Also for like nine dollars more you can buy insurance and they fully cover.
