With the basic membership plan, the free towing is usually the first 5 or 6 miles to a shop or your home. If you get the Plus package, the distance is 100 miles.
AAA keeps a record of the number of tows you request in a year and I believe that the maximum free towing requests is 4 per year. But even if you go beyond that or need extra miles, the cost per mile is less than if you would call a regular tow company.
Individual service calls for things like jump starts, bringing gas if you run out or lockout services may be more frequent, but they do check.
Also remember that AAA is for you as a person, not your car. You can be a passenger in a car that breaks down and your AAA car is good for calling for help.
AAA will provide a flatbed for towing for a Vette if the contract company has them. If they don't, AAA will usually send a different company and you pay that company, but the charges are reimbursable from AAA.
I'v ehad AAA for many years and it's well worth the money as you get all of their travel services with any of the memberships. I use them to make hotel/motel reservations and they offer a great route planning service for road trips.
I have triple AAA plus membership, auto insurance and there home owner's insurance. I've been with them for over 5 years now and just paid for my 6th year last month.
Over the past 5 years, most of the other insurance companies in TX have played games with their rates and recently had to issue refund check etc. AAA's rates have been consistent and fair IMO.
And let me tell you, no claims until last week and I'm very pleased with their service to date!!!!

I have had them for years as well and they have come through several times for me and even twice when I was a passenger in a car with problems. I think that my towing includes 10 miles and then a charge for any additional miles.
If you travel at all it can be a great added value with room discounts, (Marriott does quite a bit with AAA), trip planning, maps, and location specific guide books for the area you are going. All can be ordered on their website so no need to be close to one of their offices anymore.
Check to see if you car insurance alread has towing coverage
A lot of car insurance policies already have towing coverage included or can be added for a bit more. Most hotels will give you the AAA discount whether you have the coverage or not as a courtesy. Federal employees get a better discount than AAA at hotels. Personally I couldn't justify the expense for AAA for what they offered since my auto insurance covers towing I didn't feel the need to duplicate the coverage.
Keep in mind that while AAA maybe used to be a real "club" they are now just the country's largest towing insurance company. I get towing included with my car insurance (from AIG) at no charge, but with my previous company it was $7 per year, much less than the $35 AAA charges around here. Insurance coverage has an 800 number, nationwide sevice, and no extra charge. Kind of a no brainer for me. If the discounts are important, AARP is only a few dollars a year, and gives sinilar, if not better discounts. Another no brainer for me.
I was just in their office. Am thinking about driving up into Canada but don't have runflats.
Clerk told me it is free towing .... free for five miles, or free to the nearest shop that can fix your car. Her dad has a corvette so she understands runflats. Said if it is a problem with tires, then they are supposed to tow you to nearest shop that can actually fix your tire.
I use AAA all the time to get discounts at motels on my road trips. You can save the cost of AAA on a weekend.
