Leave the MAF alone, the stock one can handle 'bout as much HP as you can throw at it. All it does is meter air and talk to the ECM. You're throwing away $$ if you get one.
I would also leave the throttle body alone as well. Just my $.02
I love my Vararam, I picked up between 3 and 4 MPH
in the 1/4 mile, before intake I was running 104 all the time,
now I'm at 107 or 108 all the time, with a best ET of 12.89
that was running with street tires, would love to see what I'ld get with some Mickey Thompsons on the rear
I was in the same position you are just two months ago, so you can learn from my mistakes.
I put on the dual cone K & N's and a modified maf sensor. Also a WCC C/F power duct to replace the stock air bridge.
There was an improvement but.... The k & n system is not the best and it feeds the hot air that circulates in the engine compartment. The maf sensor is a problem and has caused multiple cel's for a lean condition.
The best intakes are systems that feed cold air from outside of the engine compartment, like the Vararam VR-B2, Callaway honker and Vortec to name a few. The stock maf sensor can handle up to 500+ HP and you do not need to change it.
So choose wisely and avoid having to make changes. As for me,
I received the VR-B2 today and the install is this weekend along going back to the stock maf.
There is allot of misinformation being bandied about on the forum regarding the VaraRam. One falsehood is that it is prone to hydro lock.
That is completely untrue, it takes its air through the nose behind the two slots where the fog lights are. In addition it has drain holes in it to prevent it from collecting water. It also has a split Y intake by right of their being two intakes on the bumper.
In almost 4 years of being on this forum I have not seen a single report of hydro locking with a VaraRam. If someone knows of one please send me the thread.
(But please, no stories like: “I heard about a guy once…” We need proof not rumors).
The units that are prone to hydro lock are the bottom feeders. All of these units pull air from in front of the radiator by cutting a hole in the shroud and passing the air through it. If you hit a deep puddle of water the front spoiler below the radiator acts like a shovel and scoops the water right into the shroud cavity. The air intake in turn gulps it down and you get a hydro lock.
IMO what you need to be looking for is an intake that can: 1) Draw in cold air (This eliminates the Blackwing and the Stinger) 2) Filter the air adequately 3) Do it without scooping up water (This eliminates the bottom feeders unless you can avoid driving in the rain)
If you consider the above criteria you can see why the VaraRam has its fans. However some do not like it because they say it's difficult to install. I think it's because working under the car in front of the bumper is a small and confined area. But I have become used to it so its no problem. In the past the old foam filter was a problem and many of us who owned them bought a K&N unit for the old Triumph TR6. But today VaraRam sells a K&N type unit designed for the VaraRam. So today it's a good unit.
If you prefer a bottom feeder I would go with the Calloway Honker, just don't drive through any deep water. However if you need to run a trans cooler in front of the radiator as many A4 equipped weekend racers do you will find a bottom feeder to be impractical. There isn't room for the intake and the cooler.
Hurricane by WEstcoast corvettes is a good ram air with no chance of water ingestion. PIA to clean the filter, takes two guys to do. One under the car one in the engine well.
VARARAM VR-B2 get it from www.thelapd.com it is $305.00 last month they had a special that had free shipping.
If you call talk to Shawn and he'll hook you up! They still are $305.00 but there might be shipping that is why I say call him maybey they will hook you up!
I still have the original Halltech Tric & Cobra Bridge and still believe that it one of the best bottom breathers out there. They don't manufacturer them any more but they still can be found if you look.
