Have mine set at 6250. My reaction to the light coming on isn't as quick as some, so by the time I am grabbing the next gear, I am running around 6500 rpm. That is why I have mine set a little lower.
With 3.42 gears you should start by setting the light 200-300 rpm's below the limiter setting. If you hit the limiter in any gear(sometimes it's hard to tell) you'll need to lower it until you don't hit the limiter. As you get more seat time try raising by the smallest increment until you hit it again and back off, This scientific method works great and will likely yield you the fastest times provided traction. You may have to adjust depending on track conditions. Try it.
In order to be sure your not hitting/nicking the limiter get some video, have a friend listen down track, or datalog.
Hope this helps.
If you are going to track the car, I would suggest getting a shift light where you can adjust the shift points for each gear. Mine you cannot and I am finding it not to be too useful. Here is the issue.... In first and second, the RPMs go VERY fast, so you have to adjust the shift point lower due to reaction time. This then causes you to shift early from 3rd to 4th. If your Z is stock, it might not be that bad.
So, I would suggest learning the cars sounds, or get a shift light that can adjust shift points for each gear.

Ditto...it really depends on your reaction time. Mine's set at 6200, which gives me plenty of time to grab the next gear without hitting the limiter.
I have a G2 shift light on my car. It is a bar of seven small lights - 2 green, 2 yellow and 3 red. It acts more like a tach than a shift light. I have found it much better than a shift light because I know to shift sooner if the lights come on faster. I can also get an easy indication how close I am to redline on short stright. Will I need to shift.
You want to set the light to come on 200 RPM before your desired shiftpoint not necessarily 200 before the limiter, that would cause you to hit the limiter unless you have Superman like reflexes where you can see the light and make the shift within 200 RPM and not hit the limiter.
