Can't find the thread right now, but Evil Twin had a long discourse on the French made Valeo and why it was the only one compatible with early C5 charging systems (97-00). He recommended that, if you have one, have it rebuilt and not replace it with an over-the-counter brand.

There are 6 different alt. for C5's Over the counter Alt. will not work correctly and you will have problems...

Not anymore. There is only one alternator that you can buy from GM for the C5 according to my GM guy and they make them a real PITA to take apart.
I do love ripping open NIB alternators though.
