Default Bra Advice

All,

I've read and re-read all the posts related to front-end bras/masks. Still have a few questions for those that have them.

I have a 3M clear bra but looking for extra coverage (bugs vs rocks) when traveling to a show or on a cross-country trip. Not interested in the colored bras due to costs. Also prefer lic plate opening (assume it comes with a plastic covering).

I'm torn between C5 Creations nylon knit mask and the GM Bra (appears to be many look alikes) which seems to get alot of positive comments. I've seen two GM type bras--one with a "slit" for the plate and clear material running around the screen and side markers (Ecklers#40633). Ecklers also carries one (Wolf #35632) that is very similar to another GM bra in my original GM accessory book (non Z06). This Wolf bra has many small openings that appear to not have any clear material. Can anyone comment on this bra? Any other suppliers out there with a good product that you can recommend?

Not trying to start a debate on bras, but dirt and dust can accumulate under the bra and with the wind pushing on the bra it can cause the sand and dirt to damage the paint. Just my .02

IMO, you can't beat the GM bra for price and performance. I've been running one on my car since it was new and have had absolutely no problems with the fit, quality, or paint damage.

I have one I use for long trips. It's the GM bra and has the clear over the openings you spoke of.

These things fit so tight I don't think they could move around once fitted. They have a soft backing to protect the finish. They will also stay put at very high speeds.

I made one modification to my installation. They provide sets of self tapping screw in type snaps and a different set with a machined screw type and a rubber bushing which are suppose to be used on the two points along the wheelwell lip. To use them you must remove the standard torx screw, lift the liner up and carefully move the speed nut out of the way. I would not recommend removing the speed nut as it will be tuff to ever reinstall them without completely removing the wheelwell liner. The idea behind the two per side with rubber bushings is the rubber will expand into the hole when the screw is tigthened.

Instead, I purchased four of the self-taping screw in type from the local auto parts store to replace the other four with bushings. Now I don't have to remove or move any speed nuts and can just replace the existing torx screw with these just as you do on the front sets. So instead of a lot of fussing with the speed nuts, you just replace the screw, snap on the bra and go.

On one of the numerous bra posts I mentioned this and someone posted a picture of those self-taping snap screws.

As to the original poster's question, Make sure it is the actual GM Bra, not some look alike. It has plastic covering the front license plate opening and the rest is covered.

I've very familiar with problems associated with dirt and/or moisture getting under the bras from many years back. The mini mask will be covering an existing 3M clear bra, thus, should eliminate any damage to paint.

Don't know how to post pics so I will have to refer to a supporting vendors pic. Look at Covette Central Part #105057. I've seen this in an old GM accessory book as one of two GM bras available. It looks like it fits even better than the one displayed by Jet-Jock. Anybody have this and how do you like it? More importantly would like to know if all the openings (total of 11) have a clear covering or if its just open for debris?

Well it fits a little better than that. The bra arrived at 4:30 pm on UPS, it was in the upper 40's out and I left for my trip around 9 pm. So I basically unfolded it from the box, fiddled a bit to change the fittings and get it installed. Right before I left I snapped a few pictures.

Of course as I was going northbound to Bowling Green and St Louis, it only got colder. But it does fit better than in that picture after it's been on a bit.

In that picture the tires were just put on the night before for the trip, they still have that spray stuff on the sidewalls from Discount Tire... LOL.

Sounds like they were interested to know what additional protection could be provided during transition to a show. Thought I'd mention my experience and remembered I had a picture of a GM model installed.

Jet-Jock,

Didn't mean to imply yours doesn't look good. The other GM bra (if it still exists) appears to look a little cleaner seam wise and with its openings to include the license plate.

Your pic looks great, will probably get your model unless others chime in with comments on this other bra.

Thx

They're much more expensive, but I prefer the color options offered, lifetime warranty, triple layer protection and unique mounting system which maintains the fit at almost any speed condition. Clear vinyl over the emblem and mesh over the openings. I leave mine on all the time and I wash the car after every outing. It doesn't get driven in the rain. It doesn't flap in the wind at highway speeds. The first time it's installed, you need another pair of hands. Once it's stretched, it's very easy to install/remove by yourself. There is no evidence of paint degradation from dust.

Anybody using the other GM bra (#485-24509)?

Corvette Central (#105057), Corvette Garage, and Ecklers (as a Wolf product #35632) carry this bra.

Curious as to what goes over the openings (nothing, mesh or clear plastic)? Same question when the license opening is exposed? Is it tight to prevent chaffing?

I have the same (base) GM bra that Jet-Jock posted. It fits very securely. The Z06 model is different in that it has openings for the fog light area.

Jet-Jocks model is probably the way I'm going, however, want to exhaust research on this other GM bra. Just found a GM OEM site that refers to this bra as part #12499730.

Is this color considered Lemans Blue?
