I need to remove my 99's radio-A/C surround for the first time along with the rear speaker housings. I don't want to break anything. What is the correct way to take them off?
Can anyone shed some light on the rear speaker panel removal? I have an annoying rattle that is behind one of the panels. This C5 neophyte thanks you for any tips you can provide!
Actually, if you just want to remvoe the SCREENs over the rear speakers you can just carefully pry around the edges and pull them straight out. Removing all the plastic around them is a different beast altogether.
I have loosened but not removed the rear speaker panels. You have to remove the upper seat belt bolt (requires funny Torx driver), then the overhead paneling (directly in front of rear window [assume this is a coupe?]). You'll need a "panel tool" for this, basically a pry bar with a notch in the tip, buy at any auto parts store. Then you can start popping loose the plastic around the rear speakers. I vaguely remember removing the speaker grills; I think I had to do that to reach the clips with the panel tool.
Only problem is the hatch struts are in the way. I guess you have to remove those if you want to remove the panel completely. I didn't go that far, I was just running some wiring behind the panel so I didn't need to remove it completely. You can probably get in there to stop your rattle without completely removing.
Disclaimer: this is going by memory. I had instructions from Crutchfield that I was following at the time.
Ok, then it's not just me. I tried to figure this out last weekend when I was installing a new harness for the CD changer. This was the only piece I couldn't figure out how to remove. I removed the speaker grill and then broke one of the retainer clips on the panel. I realized it was going to be more complicated. I gave up on that and just fished the cable behind the panel.
