Default How Hard and How much $$$....

Whats involved in bringing a stock 2001 Z up to par with a stock 2004 Z? Horsepower and suspension?

I have found a nice 01 26,000 miles just wandering if it would be worth it?
thanks

Kevin

Full exhaust, CAI and a tune and you'll be making more power than a "stock" 2004 Z

I agree with the mods suggested by TM-96CE. '04 Z shocks would be an improvement in the handling area and they are reasonable. If you're going to the track or the strip you'll need to think about wheels and tires.

Slightly different cam profile and different heads (valves actually, I don't remember if it was the intake or exhaust side that were sodium filled). Also the tune was a little different (I think).
A good air intake and a dyno tune and you can be right there. GM left a lot on the table in their tune.

A lot of little things. Most are in sticky posts on the forum someplace. Pretty much, a good intake, exhaust (headers) and tune will do wonders. There was also an oiling issue with some '01 cars that you'd want to look into.

I run a stock '02Z, my friend runs an '01 with bolt on mods and a good tune. We dyno within a whisper of one another.

Minor cam profile change, less restrictive air-box, no pre-cats.....that's all I can think of.

I'm not even sure you'd need the full exhaust!

Huh? Why does he need different wheels and tires to be up to par with an 04Z?? (That was his question). They are the the same with the only difference being the 01 wheels were forged Alcoa's, basically the same exact weight but a little stronger than the newer cast speedline wheels.

You will not notice the difference in HP, it is maybe 5-10 rwhp at most difference by the time it goes through the drivetrain. Shocks can be had for under a few hundred dollars for either 04Z or Bilsteins. I say go for it if you like the car.

Other differences not yet mentioned are de-screened MAF and aluminum sway bar end links.

Make sure it's been re-rung completely. My '01 was re-rung and the engine seems to still be quite healthy at 50K miles (it's putting down 470 RWHP currently) I know someone else who picked up an '01 that only had one cylinder re-rung under recall and ended up having issues with leaking.

Good luck!

Actually, Some 01's have dyno'd as low as 330-335rwhp while some 02-04's have been as high as 370 or more rwhp. It really depends on the car but from all I have seen I'd say the AVERAGE difference is ~20rwhp.

Bullitt,

Where can 04Z shocks be had for under a few hundred dollars that are not used?

STOCK is the key word.

This isn't necessarily directed toward the thread starter, but I like how people ask how many mods XXX car needs to beat stock YYY car. Why do they assume the YYY car must stay stock?

No problem....., I understand what your saying my main question is if I should put my hard earned money in an 02 to 04 or save a little and find a good 01 and have money for those mods on XXX car. Anyway thanks to all that responded I believe I will start looking at 01s also, I had previously only been looking at 02 to 04s. Those Speedway Whites are so very tempting!!!!!
