Are you trying to put it all in one box? If so, that's why it costs so much. Break that thing down - mufflers/tail pipes in one box, and over the axle pipes in another.

I ship OEM exhaust via DHL. You can strap them together to get the smallest overall girth put them in a box. The last ones I shipped were TIs, cost me $35. Non TI's weigh a little more so it might cost you $45 or so.
It was due to the size and weight of the box. Could not go UPS or FedEx had to go freight.
I shipped an entire exhaust center section, cats and all, to the east coast, via UPS, from Minnesota. That's a big piece. I didn't have to box it, but I protected all open ends. I don't remember exactly, but think it cost about $55 to ship. I did take it over, before I offered it for sale, and had the UPS dealer give me an estimate on what it would cost to ship to the most expensive place from here. That way I knew what kind of negotiaiting room I had. However, as I remember, I don't think they would insure it that way. I wasn't particularly worried about it as they would nearly have to drive a truck over it to hurt it. That's also true with a stock exhaust. Why don't you ask UPS whether you could ship each section separately, or tie them together, without boxing them, and just protect the ends for the sake of your buyer?

I bought a stock exhaust from that forbidden place and the seller sent it thru the US postal system unboxed. Mail lady pulled up to my house and took them out of the back of her car. I believe it cost $30 or so shipped that way.
