I would like to purchase C5 but need to establish rear axle ratio, if owner does not know how can I find out??? Also, opinions as to which year(s) are the most trouble free would be appreciated!

Six speeds all came with 3.42s. A4 came with either 2.73 or 3.15. The 3.15 is the performance axle and should have an option code of G92 on the options tag located either under a rear compartment cover or in the glove box.

As to the second part of your question, regarding which C5 is the most trouble-free, they are all comparatively so. The car was well engineered and executed from '97 through '04. There were ongoing changes that make the later cars more desirable to some buyers.
I chose to look for a 2002 through mid-model-year 2003. Why?
Because all the running changes were in place by 2002 (look on this forum for a list of the improvements and enhancements made throughout the C5 model's production). And one big point for me (others do not care about this): at the mid point of the 2003 model year, the fuel filter was moved INSIDE the fuel tank and a down-graded fuel injection system was put on the cars, because of an EPA dictate.
The downgraded FI system won't make much difference unless you go for big HP through modifications, then you will have to invest in a more robust FI system. But the fuel filter INSIDE the fuel tank was a deal killer for me, having had to change fuel filters from time-to-time. Having to drain and drop the fuel tanks to service the filter doesn't excite me. And it's very costly unless you DIY.
There are lots of great, well maintained C5s out there for most any budget. Good hunting!
