I have seen much on the subject of collant temps and oil pressure but was wondering about oil temperature. Is it normal to see oil temps 25-30 degrees higher than the collant temps. My coolant (highway driving) is running aroud 195-200 when its 75 outside, but the oil runs around 225 on the highway. Off the highway it drops down, around town it seems to hover about 10 degrees higher than the coolant. Oil pressure is usally rould 50psi.
I have a 2004 A4 - 3.73's, 2800 Vig stall converter, ARH headers, Corsa's, Rpm stage 4 trans (using exteral cooler only per Rody - runs at 170-185 with 75 degrees out).
Oil temps are more/less a measure of how hard you're running your engine. Oil temp can fluctuate a LOT more than coolant temps, and still be quite normal.
Roadracers running at a constant high rpm often see oil temps go over 250*...even 300* isn't unheard of.
Once warmed up, your coolant temp should always be within the window between thermostat rating, and the fan turn on points.
Your oil temp though, is largely unregulated. If you're driving the car slowly around town, at low rpms, it is typical for oil temp to run slightly above coolant temps. If you're pushing the car hard, and running high rpm's for an extended period of time, expect oil temp to go much higher than coolant temp.
For a stock C5, "normal" coolant temps are between 190 and 235. "normal" oil temps could be anywhere in the 200-250 range.
