Default Oil temperature????

Took our AE for a 250 mile drive yesterday. The engine oil temp was running at 198 while the engine coolant was cycling between 190 and 192. Is that normal ?? I was driving 70-75 mph in 65 degree ambient.

I was expecting to see the oil at or below the temperature of the coolant. What do others see?

Thanks.

That's about normal. The fans don't cycle on when you are going that fast. 198+ is perfect for oil temp, you coolant temp is fine too. The second fan is not even set to go on until your coolant reaches 225. The engine was designed to run that hot mainly for emissions. If youre in stop and go traffic with 70-90 degree temps outside, you can see oil and coolant get up to 225-230.

It's not really the temperatures that I was concerned about, it was the fact that the oil temperature was higher than the coolant temperature. On other vehicles that I've driven (with oil temperature gauges), the oil temperature was always cooler unless running high rpm's for an extended time.

Oil is thicker even when hot. It is a lot harder to dissipate heat from oil than coolant, so your oil temps will be hotter.

Yeah the coolant has a radiator, and more air flow. Also viscosity differences. When the fans go on, and/or you are moving quick you can expect the coolant in most vehicles to drop faster than the oil will. The coolant than cools the engine... that cools the oil.

How did I do on my book report mom :-)

Get an oil cooler, simple install and will lower temps about 20 degrees.

You want your oil at that temp 198-210 is the sweet spot for oil temp. If your oil temps are too low, you don't burn off any condensation.
The LS1 was designed to run at these temps.

Frank nailed the answer on the head. You can even go higher 225-230 without any harm to the engine.
I also assume your using Mobil 1. In fact, 1992 they removed the oil cooler when Mobil 1 became the factory fill.

Water is a component of combustion and inevitably some will end up in the crankcase. Water boils at 212 degrees F at sea level. Ideally you want your engine oil above 212 often enough to get the condensation out of the engine. Your oil temp is fine. On a car running normally the oil temp should be higher than your water temp.

Thanks, that's really the info I was looking for.

As far as running oil at 200 degrees vs 180degrees---either temperature will get rid of what little condensation occurs with today's engines. It will just take a little longer at a 180 degrees.

You sure don't need the oil at 212 degrees to "boil" out the condensation. Warm water (even ambient temperature water) will disappear from a pan over a little while.

I added an oil temperature gauge to my '67 as it always ran warm. The only time I saw the oil temperature higher than the coolant was while running at 115 mph for more than a half hour on a new interstate in Montana in the 70's . There's no oil cooler on it either.

But if 198-200 degrees is what the rest of you are seeing, than I'm OK .

Yep, same here.

Oil runs at 205 on the interstate with coolant at 190+.
