Default Regular Maintenance

Hey Guys,

This may seem to be a dumb question for some of you to be answering, but I am just getting started. I am only 19, so I have NO clue what I am doing, I was hoping you guys could help me out. I would ask my father, but he is worse than me

I just wanted to know what consisted of "regular maintenance?"

- If I am using Mobil 1 oil, how often should I change the oil?

- When do plugs need to be changed (spark plugs, etc.)?

What other types of maintenance should I be doing on the car? Any information you can give would help. My car is virtually new, it's a 2000 Vert. with just under 8K on the clock, but I wanted to get the information early

-Mike

Oil should be changed when the oil life monitor indicates it is time, or once per year if you don't drive it that much. Many change the oil at 3K intervals, but that is not really required. The oil life monitor is pretty accurate as to when it needs to be done.

Plugs are supposed to be good for 100K miles. I don't know that I would keep them in that long, but you can check them every now and then and if they look bad, replace them.

Coolant is good for 5 years, 100K miles - but if you are not sure when it was changed last, might want to go ahead and get it flushed and filled.

Other than that, just check your hoses and belts and change the other fluids when recommended in your owners manual.

You sparked another question I meant to ask. When the oil meter on the DIC reads "What?" should I change the oil? What percent tells me ok time to change?

I think it kicks out a message at 5%. Personally, I have a logbook of maintenance & modifications with dates & mileage. I change the oil between 3-4k miles or 6 months, whichever comes first, on my Z. Do a search on the forum & you will find a wealth of info concerning maintenance including detailed how-to guides for just about all maintenance projects. Lots of us do all of our own maintenance out of being particular with our cars and the satisfaction of doing it yourself. Good luck!
