Default slight pinging under full throttle

I have replaced my plugs with NKG Iradiums, also the plug wires. Have a K&N and Hypertech program. Even with octane booster, when I am at WOT, I often get slight pinging. Any ideas? Only other thing I can think of is an idle reset. Only so much I can really play with that I'm aware of.....and I had the same symptoms before the hypertech so that's not the issue. Also no diagnostic errors have shown up, I'm clean across the board. Any ideas? Maybe I need to boost up to 100+ octane?

I am having the same problem too . I just had my car dynoed and at 5500 rpms it began to ping .

Mods are simple : Vortex intake , and Borla cat back .

The dyno shop said it maybe a dirty mass air flow sensor , or in need of a tune ?

Anybody with any thoughts ?

Possibilities:

-Dirty MAF
-Carbon build-up in cylinders

Most likely the latter. Get a can of Seafoam and clean those cylinders!!
Enjoy the show.....smoke show that is.

give Seafoam a try. Your intake may have oil in it also..invest in a catch can. You also can try a tune other than the handheld tuner.

I would go seafoam first.
Get a catch can.
Then you can richen up the top end a little or take out a few degrees of timing with the controller......well you can with a predator, I dont know what a hypertech can do.

What exactly is bad gas from the gas station?

In My experience Bad Gas could be.

1. Lower then Advertised Octane rating (Original Poster uses Octane Boost so no issue with that. Vette needs 91)

2. Some Oil Companies Transport Diesel fuel then reload with Gasoline and deliver to your station. Not Just Mom and Pop - Major Oil Companies.

Water is less of a possibility if the station has anything but old dispensers.

Finally the Techron advertised on here is all marketing. ALL Major Brands have plenty of Detergent in the Premium Unleaded added at the Terminal. Now if this helps a vette owner with a sticky gas tank guage then so be it.... I'd like to think that the same vette owner has also started using 93 and confused Techron bottle with causing the tank guage fix.

Techron is like Y2K - All a bunch of Hype. Stick with 93 Major Brand Gas and Your "Detergent and ignition" will be plenty.

I use Techron in the bottle because I bought the car with 55,000 on the clock. The fuel gauge was acting up and I had no idea what the previous owner was filling it up with. Cheap insurance. I now use Shell 93 all the time and still throw a bottle in here and there. Anyway the Techron also helps clean injectors and keeps carbon at bay. (Of course AFTER I Seafoamed it)

Don't mean to hijack the thread , but thanks guys for the info . The dyno shop also told me that they do have to pull timing out of these cars when they tune them . Strange .

If I were to Seafoam , would it harm the plugs , or cause problems with the cats ?

I may need to try this .
Thanks ,
Jim

Default thanks....trying Auto RX too

thanks for the info everyone....I'll give Seafoam a chance, though I wasn't exactly sure what was meant by a catch can....

I have a bottle of Auto RX in right now, it should be cleaning through the oil process, but it takes about 1500 miles and I only have 300 on it so far.

The pinging doesn't seem to really affect performance, but it IS annoying. Don't want a Vette to sound like that, hehe!!

Yes, give the SEAFOAM a shot. It sounds like bad gas to me.

Do a search for OIL CATCH CAN here on the forum and I think you will be enlightened on the info you find and what it does for your car. Please do that, I assure you when you are doing researching on an oil catch can you will be very surprised.

Default Pinging issue

Well, after I took the Vette to Top Flight here, found out my pinging is due to the engine running a little lean after air intake modifications, and I have a little spike around 2200 - 2700 rpms. My hypertech program is based for 93 octane, but I can only get 91, and I really don't want to run octane boosters all the time. From what they told me, even a K&N is placed, evidently depending on the factory computer settings, you can end up being a little lean. So I will be having a specialist come in and retune the computer. They ran through my fuel and spark system, and everything checked out fine. Hopefully after the computer tune, I'll be smoother, faster, and not pinging!!!

Default Plug change

Thanks....I actually did change the plug. I bought this Vette in December of last year, and it has pinged since day one, regardless of Hypertech or not, or air flow mods.....I even tried octane booster one tank, but still pinged. So I'm pretty sure it is a computer tune issue now, but I appreciate the thought. It's only under WOT, but I dislike having a great car with a distracting ping......

Probably in your hypertech tune. Also, quit using the octane booster, it's pretty much worthless anyway. There is another thread on here where someone was using octane booster and it fouled their plugs. Did you pull your plugs and check them?

Default plugs check out

When I changed plugs the old ones were fine. I am thinking it is just a retune of the engine...when it gets completed I'll add on to this and give a heads up. Thanks for all the advice and tips!!

Default only muffler change

I did change to flowmaster mufflers, but have not changed any other exhaust components. However, when I bought the car it was completely stock, and pinged at that time. It is only when I completely punch it, so usually I don't hear it. But I hate to be next to some Mustang and when I take off hear the enging pinging.....embarrassing....

I had symptoms that everyone told me was pinging and it turned out to be a leaking head gasket venting to outside the block under heavy throttle. Search my threads. Two trips to the dealer and all the usual fixes until I had it put on the dyno at LG Motorsports. They found the leak and fixed me up, and the a well-known dealer in Dallas said that they had never heard of that happening before. Could be a weird problem like that.
