The last couple days I have been trying to figure out where I have been smelling fuel from, I see no leaks, in engine compartment or underneath the vehicle, and only smell it on the drivers side, Then today I start investigating further, and did the nose test, and the odor appears to becoming from my fuel door/gas cap, Ya I know, that is where the fuel is put in, but I never have smelt it like this before, My question is , is there some sort of gas vent that is incorporated in the fill tube, that might be plugged or broke .
Well I would pressure test the gas cap. The gasoline tank is NOT supposed to let ANY fumes escape to the air. The whole point of an EVAP system is to take those gases and cycle them through the engine.
You can also overfill the gas-tank causing some of the fuel to leak out.
I have seen posts on this forum in the past few years about the problem. Aparently there are a few different causes, including bad cap gasket, and hose clamps/ hose leaking just a tiny bit. Vapors can ignite! so get this looked at before it is too late.
Fuel Filter was replaced 700 miles ago and is on the passenger side, smell is on the drivers side from what I can tell. Also I never have overfilled the gas tank.
I guess I will change the gas cap, just to be sure.
Had the same problem , look under the drivers side rear and see if you can see were gas has leaked from the pan on that side. Mine had the tank or just the filler replaced , it was cracked and I think this is not real uncommon... Mine would only leak when it was pretty full. If your gas cap is bad you will get a Check Engine Light
Ive got the same problem. My 97 is stinking up the garage and has some odor in the cabin at times. The fumes seem to be strongest by the gas cap. Ill let you know what I find out . Please do the same.
Thanks

I did a search today becuase I have noticed the exact same thing lately. I drove the car a couple hrs yesterday and filled the tank up when I put it back in the garage and now I can smell gas through the house. But I can't smell it directly by the gas cap. I can't smell a source anywhere.

Check it anyway, replaced mine and 2 months later it was leaking.

I am not aware of any C5 fuel filter on the passenger side ! They are on the driver's side, except for 2004 which has it in the gas tank.
A lot of people have had to have one of the tanks replaced. Keep a close eye out for a leak on the drivers side. It usually needs to be full to show up.
I don't know about the '98's however the '99's have a fuel return line from the fuel rail. It connects via a wavy looking plastic line to a hard metal line at the driver's side head at the firewall. Make sure that is still connected as well. As for back by the tanks, most people report issues with the cross-over line between the tanks.
I had the same problem, the fuel filter was the problem and when they leak it will continued to get worse, even uglier it leaks on the hot exhaust. Since you recently had the filter replaced I would have it checked first!
Fuel filter is on the driver side and thats probably where the leak is. If it is make sure you use only a GM replacement. Aftermarkets don't fit properly. Been there done that.
I agree...fuel filter. I replaced mine on my 97 because of a fuel odor. they leak onto the tank shield and may not even leave a puddle, but the smell is there. (modern premium gas STINKS!!!) The new one leaks occasionally now after 1000 miles.Another poor design along with the gas gauge.
I noticed my car has been loosing gas as I parked it overnight, and I'm gettin a very strong gas odor. I noticed there was some gas leaking on the drivers side, as the tank sheild underneath had gas in it. Sound like a fuel filter? Any good write up's on this topic? Thanks guys!
