Coming back from lunch just now, I ran over a piece of 3/8" solid square rod. It imbedded itself nicely into the rear tire, and managed to tear out the inner fender from the back all the way to the front of the wheel well. When it hit the rocker panel it stopped, but not before poking out of the rocker panel a little. I found the rod still in the rocker panel. So it looks like I get to replace the back tire, inner fender, and repair/replace the rocker panel. With a $500 deductable, I guess it isn't worth an insurance claim. I guess I'll post up on the parts for sale thread for an inner fender and rocker panel - Torch Red maybe...
I've noticed more and more these days that there is tons of s..t in the roadways. I know when I haul anything im sure it is tied down or secured as not to leave it laying in traffic. People these day simply dont care about others anymore.
A few year ago I ran over a large piece of angle iron laying on a freeway offramp and cut down 2 tires on my F150. That piece was about 2 feet long and the car in front of me obstructed it until he swerved at the last second and I could not avoid it.
That rocker panel is BONDED to the car. It may very well be worth it for you to report that to insurance. I'm pretty sure it falls under your comprehensive and you will not be charged for the claim.

holy crap thats a big piece of metal. that sucks man.
i agree that it will probably cost you more than $500 to have all of that repaired. Probably be best to claim it or get a new tire and leave it like that.

That will probably depend on the insurance company. State Farm typically would regard that as coming under your collision coverage. Hitting something alive (such as a deer or a dog) comes under comprehensive, but hitting something inanimate falls under collision.

I ran over a darn jackrabbit, scraped up my front bumper and cracked the lower portion of the inner fender liner...
Luckily I repaired the bumper myself, but the lower portion of my fender liner is still cracked, just unoticeable.
Animals are a part of nature and will happen from time to time, but crap like this on the road, it is just uncalled for. I hate it when I see people on the freeway loosing half of their sh*t down the road! Pisses me off!
I ran over a large piece of exhaust pipe last November while driving at night. It made a hell of a racket as it banged around the underside of my car and even caused the car to jump up at one point. Upon inspection with the car on a hoist I found a pretty large crease in my new Dynomax LT headers and a dent in crossmember. Luckily it didn't pierce the floor pan.

Are you sure you don't live in Louisiana, that is typical of La. I stopped last year for a wheel barrow that fell out of a pick up right in front of me. No they didn't stop and wheel barrow's don't fit in a C5.
Report it to the insurance. Tire $375, rim. $250,, body damage. $700,, Paint,, $500,, Total not priceless, but enough to pay the collision deductable. Unless the part was airborn and flew under the wheel. Then compresensive would take over.
Friend of mine had a nice chunk of plate steel hit him in the foot while riding his motorcycle on the freeway......with roadrace boots on, it cut his foot half way off. There is no excuse for people to haul crap in the back of a truck and not cover it.
Lucky for us, vettes have such a low angle on the front glass that most will bounce off.

If you have State Farm (and maybe others?), it would not be comprehensive unless it was actually flying at you and was unavoidable. If you just ran over debris, it would not be comprehensive. For example, my car was hit on the nose by a steel rack that fell off the truck in front of me and struck me while it was bouncing down the middle of the road: Comprehensive. If it had been lying in the road and I just ran into it: Collision.
Sorry this happened to you! Hope you get it fixed better than new - I did!
Sorry to hear about your woes. That is a major bummer. I was travelling back from BG during the 03 caravan when a piece of retread tire spun off the car ahead of me and bounced off my right headlight cover on my c5. Nicked it up a bit but was very lucky no further damage. I am always careful looking for crap like that and then wham. You never know when or where.
