It would be a lot easier than most as you wouldn't want it glossy and smooth.
If you want to try it, I highly recommend SEM Vinyl Dye for the job. It's available at many auto paint supply stores, or the internet.
For the console, one can would be fine, and probably will set you back about $10 and an hour or so. I'd go with a very light sanding, then spray it. They probably have a few dozen shades of brown as well, so you can try to find the closest (which is why local may be your best option).
