Default New steering in '08

I read that the new '08 Corvette will have better steering feel due to a more precisely made rack as well as a stiffer shaft. I bet we could just bolt that new rack and steering shaft right into our C5s and have the same improvement. What do you think? In five or ten years, will this be a common mod?

Interesting question. Obviously the C6 has a longer rack (based on wider wheel stance which I don't think is just the wheel offset). And the C6 steering column had a different spline pattern in the cockpit, but it's the same pattern between the column and the rack. So it might be possible to use a C5 column in a C6 rack with C5 tie-rod ends??? I guess anything's possible with the appropriate motivation and funding.

Are you talking about the vacation question? Thanks for pointing that out. As for me, I will probably still have my C5 in five years.

I didn't know the C6 was wider. Interchangability would then depend on how they widened the car. If it was by control arm length and/or wheel offeset, then it would work on a C5, with C5 tie rod ends, if the mounting tabs were the same. If they widened the gap between the lower control arm pivot pionts, then they would not interchange as suspension travel would cause toe change. Probably not feasably. At least my locked thread became unlocked!

I can't imagine it being cheap. Especially if you're not a DIY.

Hmmm... Actually, I was wrong (I know, it's rare ) -- According to CAC's specs the C5 is exactly 1" wider (73.6" vs. 72.6"). I don't know if that's the exact outside measurement wheel to wheel, but I imagine it's either the same or an equal ratio... If that's true, then a 1" width reduction in the rolling chassis could easily be (and probably is) achieved by just a change in wheel offset. I'll research the offsets and compare.

I do forsee this as a very common mod on the 05-07's.

I sent a PM regarding that, I think the intention of the thread may have been misunderstood. Now, let's see the info!

Regarding width of the C6, it's narrower than the C5. I know the wheel offsets are a bit different, so that may have accomplished it alone. If so, the steering/suspension geometry wouldn't likely be affected. Since the rack SHOULD sit in the same place in the C5, then only the rack width would be in question.

I'm more concerned with the steering pump volume and any additional software upgrading that may or may not be necessary for the C5 magnasteer to function properly. I guess there's one way to find out... someone try it already!
