Just has the title says, I've noticed my HUD is getting more difficult to see during the day, I've got it turn up has bright has possible. Am I doing something wrong or do I need to bring it in to the dealer.
This photo was taken a few years ago and now the HUD is about half as bright
I just had to replace mine on my '99 due to getting dim. I elected to buy a new one since I was going to have to remove the dash pad anyway. The new one is only $197 now too. When I got the old one out, I took it apart expecting to find the light sensor coming loose from its little circuit board but that was not the case. I did find that the two mirrors inside were both dirty. One had a colored film on it that may or may not supposed to have been there. The other was a plain mirror. This film/dirt on them would have caused the dimming that I saw. But, as I said, I had a new one sitting right there and rather than putting the original back in, I put in the new one. Total time was 2.5 hours for the whole job.
Where did you buy the new one from $197 is a great price. Is it difficult to remove the old one and install the new one. Does the whole dash have to come apart or just the HUD?

Looks like the price came down again from www.gmpartsdirect.com as I just now got this info from them.

You must remove a lot of the dash to get to it. All the front trim comes out then the pad itself. Its not as hard as it sounds. Mine took 2.5 hours to complete.
If you do this yourself, on one end of the HUD is a long mounting arm. That is the tilt adjustment as well. So, be sure to turn it on and adjust before you put the entire front back together. Doing so, you might have to connect a few things while they are hanging, but oh well. You do not need to take the cluster out at all. The hardest part was in my case removing the dash pocket that I'm not so sure was needed to do. Make sure you tape the two sensors on top of the dash pad before you get it back in totally as they will fall back inside easily.
