3rd gear question

Default 3rd gear question

is it ok to drive around town in 3rd gear? seems to me forth or ( D ) is to lugie? the car is `04 auto.

Put it in whatever gear makes it go fastest when you press the gas!

Other than gas mileage, no harm, no foul.

I keep mine in "D" all the time. It doesn't shift into 4th until just about 50. I usually don't get going that fast around town anyway. Not a problem.

ok. i mean i just didnt want to stay in the wrong gear for to long. im really not used to this auto. my avtar is a `90 model. it was a 383 6speed. that is what im used to.

The only difference is that your transmision will engage one extra clutch pack or band to hold it in that gear. It will use it every time you end up shifting through to that gear, when you get to D.
So you could say you might be putting a little more wear on the trans, not much, but still. Ill bet you have a 2.73 rear end.

wear on the trans is what im worried about. i could take that zf in the `90 to iraq and back and not bat an eye.

If you're locking out 4th gear while driving in town, mostly under 50mph, I don't think you'll do any harm. You're probably doing the tranny a favor in heavy stop and go conditions...

that is what im thinking too. im only noticing about a 500 to 700 rpm increase in 3rd. at over 3$ a gallon for 93 octane whats the diff?
