I have just got through doing my HUD install. I have a 97 so I had to change the Gauge cluster also. I got a 300mph one on Ebay.co.uk and I got the switch and harness. I got the Projector from Ebay.com from Josh(PaceThis) at carolinacorvettes. Josh was kind enough to get me a bezel also to complete my parts list.
It took me 5 hours to do the install. The dash comes out really easy. mounting the projector is easy as it sits in a cradle that's built into all C5s. The hardest part was cutting the dash. I made a template out of cardboard then I drew around it and cut out the hole. There is a howto on that I used here:
Yes it's great not having to look down all the time to see what speed your going.
Its especially important in a car like the Vette which is so smooth as 60 feels like 40mph, 30mph feels like I can get out and walk faster!
There are lots of mobile speed camera vans in the UK now so you have to watch your speed constantly, which is a big distracting keep looking down all the time. I use the cruise alot to keep to the 30 & 40mph speed limits in town.
It's a great option to have. I made up my mind that although I could not stretch to a 99 Vette with HUD I was going to retro fit it even before I got the 97 Coupe.
