Yes, it is supposed to be on. The only time it will shut itself off in the auto mode is when the outside temperature drops down to around 46 - 42 degrees. It runs in the auto mode mixing hot and cold air to achieve the desired temperature set by the driver and whichever vents it selects to output too.

Yeah, well .... in that case we're always running the AC and heater at the same time, to get the mixed air (right temperature).. BUtttt, while we're using the AC, isn't the engine under load. I mean using more gas. There are times we don't wana use the AC, just the heat. These cars are built with too much electronic stuff...sometimes, in a weird way..

The AC is supposed to be on whenever you have the climate control on. I have the factory C5 video and it is spelled out clearly. According to the designers, the reason why the AC runs at the same time as the heater is to help keep the windows from fogging up due to condensation. Don't worry about the gas mileage. We drove our 2000 C5 vert from MI to Maine last year in August with the AC on and got 30.5 mpg on the way there (via expressway) and 28.0 on 2-laners through the moutains coming back. I don't think you will find another 345-350 hp engine that will give you that kind of mileage even when the AC is running... or not.
