Can't comment on the older ZR1, but I had a '94 ZR1, and I thought it was fast, and handled well.....That was then, this is now, and NOW the Z06 is King of the Hill in every aspect of performance, handling, style, etc. etc.
Why go back in time?

If I had a can of worms Id open it for you........

The ZR1 is still an awesome beast considering its 10 yrs old. Plus the cost difference between a ZR1 and Z06 makes the ZR1 the better buy given performance differences. But stock for stock the Z06 is quicker and handles alot better.

As far as the way the car feels..........You don't drive a C4, you put one on! I highly suggest you drive the ZR1.

Well it's hard to argue technology in bring the cost/benefit ratio to a new level. My mom's '92 ES300 without options stickered $28,003 and it has been a phenomenal ride ever since. But I recently rode in my friend's $23,200 '00 Maxima GXE and it has almost 40 more hp, rides almost a silently, etc...

I think stock for stock and dollar for dollar the '02 Z06 has very few challengers even against its 2002 competition twice its price. But let's not forget that the ZR1 has awesome and perhaps greater engine performance potential.

LPE's 415cid LT5 EPA package makes 650hp (130+mph traps) and his LS6 427 makes 500hp (124 mph traps). I know you can swap cams and such but in terms of smooth EPA build-ups, the LT5 built up still has awesome merits. Probably the most powerful EPA-certified all motor buildups out there.

Completely different cars, should not be compared on forums like this because flame wars result. If you can afford to own both, you should. On one hand you have a generational chassis change, on the other hand you have a slight engine technology degridation (examples, C3 to C4 chassis, good.... aluminum big block to cast iron smallblock, bad). Many will argue the fine points, and many that argue have owned one Corvette in their lifetime. Bottom line, for rompin' stompin' fun you can't go wrong with a Z06. If you appreciate a bit of Corvette history, then you will appreciate that there are several models in that lineup that showcase the generational changes, and that which is 'best' at any given point in time is a subjective conclusion. Chevy took a huge step backwards when they killed the ZR-1 option, and whether they have finally made up that step is still a subjective topic, at least in the engine department.

To succinctly answer your question, the ZR-1 is a C4. It's a pain-in-the-butt body style as far as getting in and out of the damn thing goes, it's not as 'tight' as a brand new C5, and it doesn't have quite as advanced bells-and-whistles. When we're speaking of ZR-1 C4's, it's a beast. It's not polite. The transmission is noisy in the lower gears. It does not ride like a Lexus. It might overheat. It's rude. Your wife won't want to drive it to work every day. It costs a damn fortune to work on the engine. It's got four camshafts and enough cam chains to make a bondage freak get a boner. They made 7000 of them in five years. It's not a car for the weak or the whiners. If you're not sold yet, buy her a Lexus :D

Rgds,
Mark

Seriously, If I had $50,000 I would own a Z06 also. They are an awesome car with awesome numbers that out do ZR1's stock for stock. One sweet looking car (love the FRC look). You guy's that own one are some lucky people.

Well, gotta luv the Z06's power, but here in California a hardtop is not as fun as going topless with a Coupe or Convert.
When will the Z06 be offered in a Coupe? The body style, IMO, overall looks better, too.

True, but if the Z06 was offered in anything but a hardtop, it would lose it's character of what it's supposed to be, and performance would also suffer. The facts are that you can just do more in the handling department with a hardtop. Oh well. :)

I am a c3'er so I feel that my off the feild comments might work here. Everyone must remember that the technology in the ZR-1 is over 15 years old. Remember the yellow 86 with an LT-5? I'm sure it even goes farther back than that. The LS-6/Z06 is new tech with new idea's and better advancments than ever before. To compare the two cars is like adding apples and oranges. They are both great cars in their own respect but please don't hammer down on the ZR-1 for it's faults, you have to have respect for your elders.

I had a 94 zr1 # 100.....It was and is a great car...My complaints where the the fit and finish,[black lousy paint and squeeks and rattles] and the car was heavy...The z06 has had countless improvements in all areas, plus some serious loss of weight...They are both supercars, if you can get a low mileage, fully documented zr1 for a good price , grab it, you will really enjoy the car.. :yesnod: :yesnod:

You know the saying .. 'All Corvettes are Red' ? Well, my take is 'All Corvettes are cool'. Buy whatever you want and can afford (or justify to a spouse). There's no point trying to compare anything to a ZR1; all such opinions are biased by our individual wishes for a car. This kind of decision is not made based on logic .. it's based on desire.

In my opinion the ZR1 will always be the King. But, I am buying a Z06 since I don't know where I would get the ZR1 fixed. Its hard enough trying to find somebody to fix a regular vette. I think the ZR1 will be more collectable eventually also. Get both and enjoy...
