I'm going to be replacing wheels and tires soon. Should I just use the old tire sensors ('99 with 64,000 miles) or get some new ones?
I don't really want to drop another ~$350 for four brand new sensors but I also don't want to have to replace them right around the corner after getting my new wheels and tires put on.
I would (and did) replace the sensors. They are 8 years old, original life was suppose to be 7 years or 100,000 miles. This is for the generation I sensors which you have. I bought my sensors fron Frictners (sp?), a Forum Sponsor (go to Ken's Newletters), about $80 each. Make sure you get new o-rings and Nuts (cheap to get at same time).
I would not mess with used ones. You can replace batteries, maybe, but it is a job (have to dig out sealant, and solder/weld battery) and it is not always 100% successful. There were some people doing this, but I think they went out of business. There are two "date circles" molded into sensors wih arrows pointing to the month and year of manufacture.
BTW, generation II (2001-2004) TPSs last longer, probably 10 years. This is due to them not updating tire pressure in real time like generation I does (they update at a longer interval). Not to worry, if you loose air pressure, generation II transmit immediately.

Will the generation II work with my car? I thought I had to get the Gen I sensors?
I also have a 99..Put new polished Y2K's on it and reused the old sensors..Still work fine...You can't swap out sensors..97-00, 01-04 cant be interchanged..
I bought new ones when i put new rims on my 2K. One of the old ones was giving a little trouble but still working. I was putting new rims & tires on at same time. I kept the old thin spokes and tires were good. It probably would have cost me another $60 to $80 to take the old sensors out to put them in the new rims & tires. So consider that cost.
Figure I would be ahead of the game with new rims, tires, sensors at the same time and still have a good second set.
Your call either way
I just got my new sensors from gne at gmpartshouse in PA. he is awesome to deal with. excellent cust service. And it was like 320's delivered for 4 of them next day :-P
Im putting hte old ones on ebay, they fetch about 140 to 170 depending on the day which is a net loss of apx 1/2.
You can fix them, dremmel out the filling and replace the batteries, there is a postin gon how to do that. But its mad time. I dont have time but I have the $$.
So will I be able to get my old sensors off of the old wheels easy enough? Can I reuse the nuts and just order the sensors?
The thing is I was gonna just sell my old wheel's (wagons), tires and sensors as a set and hope to recoup some of the cost that way. Would it be better to just leave them together like that and buy the sensors and the nuts?
Hawg, take the car to a rim specialist..Run flats are hard to dismount from what i've heard..Some teenager working the tire machine might damage them..I went to a rim guy who worked on tons of vette..You can probably reuse the nuts but will need new o rings..He did a fabulous job!!..Sold my fugly wagon wheels for $140 bucks..
