Default Help!!! Crickets in my Engine... Chirp Chirp!!!

Anybody here recall a quick, decent DIY fix for engine chirp? I had my car serviced this past weekend and requested belts be checked and replaced if need be. Mechanic said belts were in good shape. He said he could spray something to eliminate the chirp, but sometimes, it comes back worse than before. I gave the go-ahead. He sprayed something I believe was brake cleaner fluid on the belt, and the crickets died for the next two days... They're back.

I remember a member, maybe Scissors, suggested some type of grease to silence it once and for all. Anybody remember, or have any other tips???

I've got a trip to Destin Florida next week, and I don't want the chirping for 14+ hours.

Thanks!

BTW, noise went away before I had a chance to do anything.

I would change the belt, went through the same thing last year on my daughters car, belt looked fine, I changed the tensioner and it worked for about a day, I then got a GoodYear belt, ( think it was a gatorback) and it has been fine since, good luck

Could be alot of things, my problem was a very unexpected one. Appartly my water pump had a very tiny leak & was distributing antifreeze on the belt in tiny doses, enough to cause a chirp that you could hear for miles ! Lesson... don't assume anything !

if it is not the belts then it is likely one of the pulleys or the A/C compressor clutch...

To diagnose....
1. remove the top serpentine belt
2. remove the lower A/C belt
3. hand spin each pulley. they should move freely without wobble. If one of then binds, wobbles or feels gritty that is the culprit.
IF that does not identify the problem, leave the lower belt off and install the upper belt.
If there is a squeal it is on th eupper system. If there is not squeal the problem is on the lower system.

Most vehicles I have had with a serpentine belt started to squeek. It is due to the belt developing tiny cracks that hold moisture and squeek/slip. IMHO change the belt.

replace belts with new Goodyear Gatorback belts. Auto Zone is a retailer who sells these belts.

Had the same thing 2 months ago. Would hear the chirping and got lounder when going through a drive-thru (sound resonating off the walls). Dealer said belts are A-OK, still got them replaced (though made the mistake of not using gatorbelts) and the noise went away. Many people have had success and longevity with gatorbelts. Would recommend them.

I've had this problem since last summer... What a pain in the ( ! ) I've changed both belts,, couple of pulleys,, still squeeking away. It apears that it is more squeeky from a cold start. after running 15-20 miles it seems to quiet down, I'm taking it back to the shop in a few weeks. Just drives me nuts,, feels like i'm driving and old wreck sometimes,,, makes me want to sell it some days.. ... but she looks real good parked !

Default Thanks, All!!!

Gatorbacks did the trick!!!
Picked them up from AutoZone Friday night, and put them on Saturday morning. Had a bit of a time with the socket on the lower side, but finally, SUCCESS!!!
No more crickets!! Thanks again, guys!

The chirp is acting as it should, as a warning. Something is wrong. I had my serpentine belt replaced and 300 miles later it was squeaking. I ignored it, and shame on me...the tensioning pulley went out next.
Get your car looked at before you get stranded.
Good luck.

I had a noise that sounded like a lifter tick right after cleaning the engine . first it was the tensioner pulley now 100 miles later the ac tensioner pully is bad too , so bad that the belt has walked froward onto the harmonic balancer !

The "paint" on my waterpump pully was wearing off in one spot and that was the source of my crickets. I tried everything that anyone on here had mentioned and it didn't help. I repaced the waterpump and it's been about 2000-3000 miles of heavenly silence! The Gatorback belt didn't help because it was too short! If it fit it might have helped but we'll never know. Check your waterpump pulley for missing coating or paint or whatever the stuff is.

Well I took the car in to the Dealer/Stealer he said I needed a Crankshaft & bearings - Vibration damper for about $350 ,, and Steering gear and linkage - Pump and hoses $50. What a ripoff !! I contacted Gene Culley from www.gmpartshouse.com he was selling what I needed for less than 1/2 price !! (( Thanks Gene ,, keep up the good work )) Crankshaft & bearings - Vibration damper $110 and Steering gear and linkage - Pump and hoses - $12 what a difference.

Now the dealer installs these parts but then screwed up my power steering pump trying to remove that $110 part. So I had to get a new power steering pump. $280 ,,, they get their $$$ anyway they can. Anyways everything is installed all is quiet I'm as happy as can be.

Next day I'm washing my car and notice OIL under the car ,,, the friggen steering pump is leaking fluid .

Took her back to the dealer,, they changed the pump.. now there's no leak but there's a squeek again... W T F !!! So far I've spent about $1300 on this problem and it's still not resolved. I'm supposed to go back.. but they are as fed up as I am..

Think this little girl will be for sale soon !

I hate to hear that, because most of the time a chirp is belt related, I followed rws.1 steps and found both pulleys on the AC belt were shot tensioner and pulley. When I removed them I found the grease flung out of the seal only 35K miles, kind of common but I would look into that area. Spent about an hour replacing the pulley, tensioner and belt and as is well, completely quiet.
