[Z06] detonation... errr
I could never hear mine on the street for that same reason. I could visually see it on the Dyno; I would see a puff...puff... out of the exhaust. Later I went around the front of the car during the dyno and could hear it, it sounded to me like a tapping of a wrench head on metal, kind of a metal tapping sound. On the street I cant hear it, cars to loud.
Get it in a controled environment or hook up the lap top and see if it KR's.

The marbles in the can is detonation. If you hear marbles in the can type sound that means for the most part that your knock sensors are not working early enough and your pcm will eventually pull timing to protect the motor...but if you can hear it...then the knock sensors are bad because they are allowing detonation to occur.
Remember it sounds like marbles rattling around in a can..(as you accelerate through the rev band at times...)
Some say its normal below 2000 rpm under load...
I'd say mimimally...if at all.
FWIW ....The Sewing machine sound with aftermarket cam and valve springs tends to be normal.
Be aware....decifering sounds via typing on the net is not easy.
And as mentioned doing a decarb via seafoam or GM top end cleaner can more often than not do the trick. For me it wasn't enough becuase the knock sensors needed to be replaced...Just letting anyone know so it might help those in a similiar situation to what I experienced.
Good luck.
