Default Chrome vs. Stainless

I am going to add some bling to the engine compartment after all the painting I have done. I now wonder which is best, Chrome or SS? I want a plenum cover, maybe some fender covers, caps, ect. I have heard that chrome peels under the heat, SS gets dull if not high polished (with a buffer) so I want to hear from the experts.....you guys....Thanks.

The only thing i've heard is that SS tends to scratch easier than chrome. Hopefully someone that knows more than me will come by and be able to tell you the pros and cons for each.

I have had both and I prefer chrome. The chrome I have is from CEC and has yet to peel or crack. Check out Cajundude in the for sale section it looks like he has some chrome items for sale. The SS I had had a yellow tint and scratched very easy. My opinion is spend the money and get the quality chrome.

I prefer chrome because it doesn't require the maintenance that stainless steel does. Stainless also tends to show swirl marks over a period of time.

Your other thread is living strong...

Both are good, as mentioned above Chrome is less likely to scratch.

SS is great if you take care with it. Use a Cali Duster on it and only foaming windex after the dust has been removed and you are good to go.

Peace
Chip

Just finished up with a friends 04 vert engine and it turned out great used as much stainless as I could find only thing left is the master cylinder cover thats on back order.I've had no problems with stainless as long as proper cleaning is done.

I have alot of stainless on mine. I use adams detail spray and a micro fiber cloth to clean and it works ok. It will scratch easy. A friend of mine has all chrome and he wipes in down with a shot of windex. 3 years and no scratches or peeling. I may have all of my stainless chromed next winter.

I too have heard that the stainless will scratch easy - a major negative for me. Chrome will look much better IMO.

Started with stainless and found that it scratches too easy. Am in the process of converting to chrome. I think the chrome looks much nicer.

The biggest factor I can see is price. Price your bling in stainless and then in chrome. I think when you see the difference, you will make that decision. For me, a engine completely done full of stainless right now, is better than one or two pieces of chrome. I will say, my one pride and joy chrome piece from Creative Engines, was a chrome dip stick top alone at the price of $60! I would need a loan for the plenum cover.

Ya always gotta remember one thing..."Chrome don't get you home but shiny gets you hiny!!!

Go with the chrome. Got it all over my Harley, Rocker boxes, oil tank, exhausts, all high heat areas, been on there for over 13 years, no problems. The only problem you might run into is if the piece is plated billet aluminum. If the process isn't done properly it can bubble and lift off.

Chrome is the only choice. It stays looking great and I've never heard of quality chrome peeling under hood. Everyone I know with ss wishes they had chrome and you can't chrome over stainless.
