Default window problems

for som reason my drivers side window will go down (with a god-awful noise) but will only come back up about 3-4inches under it's own power. I tore the door apart to see what the problem was and saw this:

When the window goes down, there isn't a problem. Then the window gets to the bottom the spring compresses (i assume it's supposed to do this)

When the window is rolled up, the spring remains uncompressed until it gets stuck (on somthing.....i didn't see anything dangling or getting caught) The the spring compresses and the motor locks up.

What is causing this?/how can i fix it?

I think the springs built into the drive cables keep tension on the steel cable inside the motor housing so the cables stay in the grooves on the drive pulley.
My guess is that the cables may have become twisted or kinked inside the gear housing and you are going to have to replace the regulator assembly.
You could pull the motor/drive assembly apart to see if the cables are binding inside the housing.
Does the sound appear to be coming from the motor housing, or somewhere else?

couldn't really tell where the sound was coming from specifically. It seemed to be from the motor area thought.

Mine just started this too, but it will still roll all the way up.

After playing with the C3 I had, I would suggest putting some lithium grease on all the moving parts before you rip it apart. The old vette's will get stiff with age, and some new slippery stuff usually made them work again...

And if you do have to tear it apart later, at least you will have gooey stuff on everything, make sure you have plenty of rags laying around... Don't ask how I already know this....
