You do know that was all bogus, right? The actual incedents were people making contact with the gas pedal due to unamerican pedal placement style. The 20/20 or whatever show it was actually rigged their test car to show what the fault would look like. Just like they rigged the chevy truck to blow up on side impact. Fact.
That was 60 minutes (doing the Audi story), and about the worst bit of slander they've ever aired.
Like another poster mentions, there's no way the accelerator can overpower the brakes.
Nice day in Troy, MI so I drove the car to work. Coming back from lunch I was coming up to a RED light…. The car was crawling… just rolling a little with my foot gently pressing down on the brake when the car suddenly unexpected accelerated!
Because my foot was already on the brake, my instinct was to smash it down. The car lunged forward about 3 or 4 feet but I was able to stop it.
When the light turned green, I was able to drive off as normal and pulled over to check all systems… including myself. All looks fine.
I searched the board, is there a bulletin about this issue?
Sorry about your scare. That must have rattled you a bit. It would have rattled me. A couple of thoughts, and one suggestion.
Could you have accidentally hit the gas pedal when you put your foot on the brake? I only ask because I put a different gas pedal on my vette so I can heel/toe for HPDEs, and I have to be careful or when I brake I will also hit the gas pedal. Has happened a couple of times.:o
Did you gas pedal (really throttle control) stick? Have you checked to see that it is working correctly?
Computers do screw up on ocassion. It might have been that 1 in a million thing and it occurred to you.
One suggestion, if it happens again shift your car in neutral. Easy for me to say after the fact. Takes a lot of experience and presence of mind to pull something like that off when it is happening to you.
If you learn anymore about this please let us know.
Could it be size 12 right foot, low brake fluid and with the inner edge of the right foot on the brake and the outer edge on the accelerator (unknowingly)?
Here's what they said... right and left speed senors are bad, plus the wire harness to the ebcm must have got caught in the fan as they are stripped & frayed...
I had the ebcm & bpmv replaced in oct, they stated looks like whomever worked on car last tried to repair but did a hack job. I told him his sister dealership did the work, they were the last under my hood... then he backed off that statement. He stated that he would send me pics.
Before I retired they changed the issued uniform boot to one with a larger toe box (better boot for rescue work, sucked for everyday street work though). Driving a crown vic in the snow, very slow (5 mph maybe), approaching traffic stopped at a light. Slow brake application, didnt trigger abs, stopping about ten feet behind vehicle ahead, no problems. Half way there, rpms start to come up, car starts accelerating (Uh oh! lights going off inside my brain :-) ), so whatdya do? push a little harder on brake......bad idea :-) Wound up tapping the guy in front of me (no damage, but it was an unnecessary stress test I didnt need that day).
Driving about 28 years (25 in emergency service), first time that ever happened.
Cause : spanned the gas and brake while braking.
You would be surprised how easey it is to catch the left side of the gas pedal while braking. The gas pedal is alomst always lower than the brake so nothing happens until you take some of the travel out of the brake. By then you are sure you are on the brake and often will reflexively press down harder. Engine (even in a crappy commuter car) will always win over brakes.
Never happened in the C5, but I drive with sneakers (and after it happened at work, you can bet I wont make that mistake again, only takes once :-) ).
Not saying that is what happened to you, just posting FYI ( . . .and I before it happened to me....I might have said "nah..I'd never do that"....you'ld be surprised :-)
Good luck
P.S. Sorry, didnt catch (third post above) that you already ruled out the spanning issue, oh well, still something to think about for others, good luck.

I had one of those '85 Audis, my wife broke her foot trying to stop the thing and left quite a few feet of rubber on the road when it finally came to rest in the back of a mercedes!

No. It will feel that way because you are anticipating slowing a lot more than you do, but you are still slowing down, not accelerating. Your brakes have the power to break traction on all four wheels, the gas can only do this to two wheels at slow speed in low gears. 4>2. Try pushing both at a stop. What happens? The car either boggs out or does a standing burn out. Your front brakes alone overpower the gas. In a braking situation even more wieght is transfered off the rear wheels and onto the fronts. Don't believe me? Test it, go down the freeway and crush both pedals. You will slow down.
