......no problem, it says this on the decal in the engine compartment, and it refills at 26 ounces, I should know, I was 12 oz low last week....
is it common in the c5 to be low? The garage wouldn't refill it, it's illegal or something, they had to find the leak and seal it, and if it's in the compressor, which it likely is, they have to replace the compressor, the evaporator, some other things, charge for the gas dumping, and refill. Total 1700 bucks. It really just needs some gas like most cars do from time to time. stupid environmental laws getting a bit ridiculous. So I'm going to go wherever I have to go to get it refilled, and I wanted to make sure the right gas was being used.
Ok, more dumb questions coming. Where do you check the refrigerant level? Procedure for adding more?
Go to your local autoparts store. Buy a can of R134a refill. [I just had to refill my daughter's car a few days ago. Nice cold air now.] Be sure to buy a can that has a gauge on the hose. I bought the "Measure & Charge Refrigerant & Oil" 18 ounce can. Don't overfill it or you will do damage to the system. Only fill to the blue range on the gauge. Connect to the low pressure metal line (the thicker of the two). Use short, few second long bursts while engine and a/c running, so you can check the gauge after each blast of refrigerant. It is just like putting air in your tires. Check the gauge and don't overfill.

isn't there a downside to using that stuff? I remember the mechanic telling me not to use it for some reason, you can't repair it after or something like that because it leaves a substance in your system...I can't remember exactly but something about the can leaves something in your system that can cause a problem if you need to repair your a/c ever. Anyone know what i'm saying?

You can buy a can that does not have the oil--Pure R134a. A mechanic would not use anything different. I used the one with some oil because it was going into an 11-year old car.

.....Why do they want to replace the evap. if it's the compressor leaking?....no reason to do that unless it's leaking too, I would just add freon for now, and save your money. Rural King has it on sale right now $3.49 for a 12 oz can......if you lose a charge fast then spend the money fixing your car, but you may just have a slow leak right now....

In order for the compressor's warranty to be valid you need to replace the evaporator, if you use the same evaporator it voids the warranty, and they make a case for it by telling you how it's worth it for a couple hundred bucks more you get a full warranty as well as a new evaporator, and if something happens to your compressor in a year you're out another 1700 bucks so you better get it. It's basically a big sham. I'm getting it filled one way or another. It will have to be broken or have a big leak before I get it done at the garage.
I agree, I replaced my compressor on my C4, and no problem w/ the evap...I think they are trying to see how much money they can get from you actually.....
