My Red Top Optima is 3 years old and still going strong. I paid $99 at Costco but notice it is now $147. Still it is a good deal and there is no worry about the possiblity of a leak onto the computer or wires below.
I may be wrong here but I don,t think you can buy the orginal style battery. I tried and my dealer supplied a standard wet style replacement battery, which I rejected. Tried Delco website and could not find the orginal p/n just the same battery as the dealer tried to give me. So I went red Optima so far so good had for about one year now.
I just bought an 06 ZO6. I mainly drive it on weekends. I have already had several instantances where the car wouldn't start & I had to jump it. I make sure the acc is off when I shut it down. I ran into Tom Peters of GM & he said they had a problem with the battery going down in 06 & it was fixed in 07. Has anyone else had the same problem. The car only had 826 miles on it, so the original owner didn't drive it much, so could it simply be time to replace the battery?
Wasn't the stock Z06 battery one of the items Chevy saved weight with? Why go aftermarket? Just looking for some info here.
the factory battery usually failed early. and iirc they were discontinued
I put an optima ($119 with a 36 month warr) in my 02 in the spring of 05,
that one lasted almost 2 years was warrantied (full replacement) a few months ago ,
currant price at advanced auto was 147 at that time
One word of advice concerning a red/orange top Optima versus their yellow top...the red/orange top is not meant to be fully discharged, and they can actually fail prematurely if you let them die. The yellow top is designed for "emergency" use, including complete discharge. I've read a hell of a lot of stories about red/orange tops failing way before their time due to this reason, so if your Corvette is your pleasure car you should keep this in mind.
redline - my GM service rider buddy said the batteries go down on the C6 due to the key left in the ignition. The key must be a certain distance from the car, so it does not begin communication with the ECU - not a c5 issue
Now that there are more Optima batteries in use, I am starting to notice they have failures just like any other battery.
If not for the leakage problem, I would stay with the Delco battery. I just got a 7 year Delco battery for my 04, but then I have top post terminals so leakage is not much of a problem.
If you check the AC Delco website you see that if you buy one of the Professional 7yr models, it is guaranteed for 50 months, free replacement.
I drained it down pretty bad messing with the headlights for hours.
then I had it sitting for a month or so and it was at 0 volts. I jumped it with 2 set of jumper cables and it is a tad low on the volts, but it hold a charge now. Just havent been able to drive it due to clutch issues.
we'll see if it dies on me. A normal battery would already of been toast. I have done this lots... I am lazy.
