The suction cup mount for my 8500 X50 is getting a little worn out so I'm looking for a better/different way to mount it.
After doing a bunch of searching I've found two options and am wondering if anyone has any experience with one of them.
I found the visor mount from vettemods.com, but I'm not sure I like the position of the detector. I think it would make it harder for the driver to distinguish the lines of the bogey counter, and I could fold the visor all the way forward, which I like to do when I have the top out.
I also found the vettequest mount, and I like the idea of it much better. But all the installed pictures of it are with the standard mirror, and I have the self-dimming (electrochromatic) mirror.
Has anyone successfully used the vettequest product with the self-dimming mirror? Pictures would be great if you've got 'em.
I have the visor mount one in the first link but put it on the passengers side because I couldn't put the visor all the way down to block the sun with it on the drivers side. I like it on the passengers side now better anyways and it works perfectly.

I assumed that it had to be put on the passenger's side. If it fits on the driver's side then that might be the way to go. I just assumed because it was advertised as going on the passenger side that it was somehow fitted to that side of the car.
I don't like the suction cup, it marks up your glass I dont like to hang it up, it makes everyone follow you when they see you have a radar D.
so I like you, I was looking for a better way. while shopping at my local auto store I came across a sticky mat it's used to keep thing from sliding around lose change cell phones stuf like that. IT HIT ME! this is what I need. I place the mat center of the dash board loop the power cord around the Oh S**t handel pluged it to my cig lighter. works great and it cost$ under $5.00
I have the VetteMod Bracket and it's the BEST mount I've ever used for a radar detector! If my top is on I leave it up as you can't see it from outside the car, it's easy to reach to mute and it's mounted perfectly to catch radar from all angles...(V1)....It was easy to mount and I've had no problems with it.....Here's a shot of it....

I agree 100% , but I have the Escort , never comes off unless I leave the top off.

I tried this approach and wondered if it placed the detector too low on the dash? Mine also allowed the unit to move around a bit...but, that may be caused by the poor quality dirt roads in Alabama?

I read in a thread somewhere that the detector doesn't actually 'clip' onto this mount the way it does with the detector's provided mount. Is that true? I'd hate to have a sudden acceleration cause the detector to come flying off into my (or my wife's) forehead.

I had to do a little work on it to make it clip in , its thicker than the one that comes with it , but it didn't take much.I hit it with the bench grinder or you could use a file. I have never had mine come off.
Another satisified VetteMods customer. I use their mount with my Escort 8500 and I love it. I can see the detector no problem, passenger visor can be tilted forward most of the way, detector is very difficult to see from outside the vehicle.
I ruled out the mirror detector mounts because I thought the detector was too conspicuous from the outside.
If you don't want a spendy custom bracket, then just use clear silcone seal to glue your stock bracket (minus the suction cups _ directly to your windshield.
I have done this many times and it works great.
Clean the back of the mount and windshield area with alcohol
preposition and outline the location with an erasable marker
put clear silicone seal on the mount, keep in mind that it will spread out when pressed to the glass
press it in your outlined location and tape it up with blue masking tape
let sit over night
pop in your radar dector and it will last for years.
I did go to their web site, but based on what I see there they only offer a V1 mount for the C5. The Escort mount is only available for the C6.
It's the same bracket for the V1 and the Escort, I have the Escort and make sure you check your rear view mirror, if it the slightly longer one get the one with the slight bend in it other wise it hits the rear view mirror when your trying to point it straight out. I purchased Two of them and very happy with the quality and setup.

Which is the one with the slight bend in it - the one for the auto-dim mirror? The only choices on the web site are for standard mirror or auto-dim - I don't see anything indicating which one has a slight bend in it.

The detector mounts solidly on the bracket. I had an Escort on it then switched to the V1 and it worked great with both.....
