Does anyone have a guide on how to change it and what is the recomended fluid to replace it with?
There is a plug on the back, open it up and let the fluid drain out. Then replace the fluid and put the plug back in. I like RedLine fluid, don't forget the limited slip additive.
there are two plugs a lower drain plug and an upper fill plug,
Make sure you can remove the fill plug before you remove the drain plug....
Synthetic 75W90 gear oil ( 2 containers) Mobil 1 is as good as any... + 4oz GM or aftermarket limited slip differential additive.... put it in first so there is no dosage issue.
We just did ours with Amsoil SVG (Severe Gear) 75W90. Before the change we had some limited slip binding going on during tight turns. The car only has 24000 miles on it (2001 Coupe) but having just purchased it, we thought it prudent to change ALL of the fluids to get a baseline on when the services were performed and doing it yourself will save you $100's. The Amsoil SVG already has friction modifier built in so there is no need for additional additives. The Amsoil quickly improved the performance of the rear in tight maneuvers. No more hopping tires, or binding.
As mentioned above, there is a drain plug just forward of the rear leaf spring. The drain is in the rear 'cover' of the diff.
Get a hand pump ($10) to pump the gear oil in. I believe the diff holds about 1.8 quarts total. If you can change the engine oil, you can do the rear diff, and the M6 tranny. It's just as easy as the diff.
Another note, always remove the fill plug first to make sure you can get fluid back in after draining. You don't want to be 'stuck' with a seized fill plug and a drained diff.
