Default Z06 backfire

New to the Z06 side and a question of backfire. 2003 Z with 800 miles. When cold backfires for the first couple of miles and then when warm every so often in 2nd gear shifting down from 3rd. No engine mods. Is this common? Did a search but didn't find this problem. My 04 coupe is an auto so the manual trans is new to me.

If you are talking about popping on deceleration then it's common. If your car is actually backfiring then I would take it to the dealer to let them take a look.

Did you mean 8000 miles or do you really only have 800 miles on your car?

If you do have less than 1000 miles on a car thats 5 years old that could be one of your problems. If so take your car out and drive it like you stole it for a few miles and it should solve some of your problems. If you have put only 800 easy miles on your Z then you may have caused some damage from not driving it enough.

You may want to wait for more responses but I would just drive it hard and see what happens.

the burbling is common. if it is a no **** backfire, then there is another issue on your hands all together. Take her for a good ride, she needs to be spanked every now and then

Thanks for the response. I bought the car in May with 530 miles on it. It was in storage due to a death and I'm trying to put some miles on it. This should be a fun summer.

Some pop and crackle are normal on overrun, when cold. Overrun is backing off on the gas as when shifting at part throttle. Ever listen to a Ferrari? True backfire is never normal, and is an indicator of some problem (spark advance, lean condition etc).

My car if left parked for 2+ weeks can do this if I stomp it and lift off the throttle while it's still cold, i.e. oil temp <100.

I have a Blackwing only.

For obvious reasons, I normally let the car warm up before WOT so it's easily avoidable.

Most likely, the car at startup enters into some sort of closed-loop operation so it can warm-up (not reading the O2 sensors), and the leaner condition caused by the intake creates the backfire.
