You don't need them in the sense that you can still drive the car without them, but they are a safety feature if you are driving on runflats. If you don't have them, you will continually get warning messages on your DIC, which you can remove (but only temporarily) by hitting the reset button. If your car is an '01+, you can deprogram the BCM with a Tech II to deactivate the sensor receivers.
