Default A Young Mans Dream

I wrote this a while back about my childhood for our Corvette Club news letter and thought you guys might get a kick out of it

A Young mans dream

When I was a young man every summer we would take a long car ride from NY to FL for our annual vacation in the warm sunshine. This one trip was always very special to me, as we headed south down the interstate I laid in my favorite traveling position in the back window of the dinosaur like Pontiac Catalina staring back at the highway and other cars. This was before we all worried about child safety seats and really no one wore seat belts they where always tucked down in the seats of the big machines and air conditioning in cars was a big ticket option.

Well as I gazed back at the traffic I saw this one car closing in on us a little faster than the rest a few seconds later I could tell it was really flying. Now the old man was not a lead foot but he was usually good for 10 MPH over the posted speed limit on the interstate. As the car got closer I was so impressed with the look and the sound of the car as it passed by us at a speed that made it seem like we were parked on the interstate. Even the old man grinned as the car roared by us although he knew it was wrong to advocate this kind of behavior.

It was many years later that I realized that car was a mid sixties silver Corvette coupe with a black stinger on the hood and the sound of what was a 427 cubic inch motor with side exhaust. I will never forget that day and that sound as long as I live.

And so began my affair with America’s favorite sports car, I bought my first Corvette when I was 21 years old a 1972 white coupe then later a 1985 white coupe and then a 1986 black coupe.

A few years later my first C5 a 1997 arctic white coupe. Today I drive a 2001 quicksilver coupe with some little black stripes on the hood and can only hope that one day my car will make a good impression on someone that will last a lifetime and spark an interest in these great cars.

Sincerely,

Angelo Pousa

On my 2nd date with my now wife, a Vette went buy. It was back in the early C4 days and she told me it was always her dream to have one.. but alas she knew she never would.

Good thing for her she was on a date with a Medical School student.

February 2007 I bought it for "her"... now Im obsessed :-)

If it was up to me though, my fav has always been a 1959 :-)

Red with white body side panels.... drool :-)

It's amazing how events that happened so long ago can affect our lives. In 1976 my brother bought a white stringray with red interior. I fell in love with that car. I was 14 yrs old, he use to "let me" wash and wax it - and I did - as often as I could. I'll never forget that car. I've been in love with Corvette ever since. 25 years of marriage and three children later - I bought mine. A 2004 Arctic White coupe.

Just so happens to be a '59 for sale here where I live. They want $52k for it, or at least thats what was on it about two months ago when I looked at it. Its red with the white side panels. Very nice looking.

Very good story. Sometimes all it takes is one event to make a lifelong impression on a person.

I'll bet if we took a poll here on the forum - there would be some similar stories of a young man or young lady being impressed by seeing a Corvette when they were young.

The Corvette has been a "Dream Machine" for over 50 years. It was the car that many aspired to own - when one was seen we uttered the words,"One of these days....."

Nice write up and thanks for sharing.
