I just installed a Halltech Stinger on my 03 Z. Really straight forward installation and car runs great. I noticed on the instructions pictures I downloaded from the WEB (No instructions came with intake) that there was a screen on the MAF in front to protect the sensor wires. My MAF had no screen. Do Z06's not get them or did a previous owner take it off?
Not any more. About a year ago, I brought in my BONE STOCK Z06 for a dyno run to see what it was worth. We put a screened MAF on the car and ran it up a 2nd time. Got about 5 less rwhp across the rpm spectrum. Changed it back and back came the hp. That screen is worth about ~5 rwhp .

Interesting. I wonder about efficiency and possible drivability though. Without the screen, there is no doubt the airflow through the sensor is less even, rendering the sensor less acurate. And different intakes will create different types of airflow through the sensor. My car is an '01 with the screen and I notices some if the screen was a little bent up. Just a little. I have been on the fence about descreening it. Do you know if the '02+ MAFs or programs are different in any way to compensate for the different flow without the screen? I am just worried that if I take it off, I will have a loss in drivability or MPG for very little power gain.

1. The PCM MAF calibrations are different.
2. ANY change in the airflow of the engine requires a tune up. A change in the airbox only requires a MAF remap to ensure it sees the same air it should w/new box as old. For an example, see my post on this "Adding a HallTech Stinger to Stock 02 Z06".
3. If you remove the screen, you will end up with higher fuel trims and a leaner overall mixture. In every case I've seen, the a/f goes lean with any airbox change resulting from the maf reporting less air than normal (have datalogged this fact and fuel trims indicate it). The perfect thing to do if you have a stock airbox is to take an 02 maf map and use it w/the descreened maf then you shouldn't see any variance in A/F over stock.
