Pardon the length of this post but I wanted to make sure I included all pertinent information. Read on.....
Well we got the vette back from the Chevy dealer today after having them try to fix the "Service Column Lock"/Motor shutoff/Pull Key, Wait 10 seconds" nightmare.
A quick recap-
12/04- took it in for first recall "fix." The replaced the "K Harness" as per GM's instructions that was supposed to solve the problem. It pretty muchh worked until last weekend. Got a few "Pull Key" messages over the years but never any problems.
6/3/07- The nightmare returns. Got the "Pull Key" message and then the "Service Column Lock" and motor shut off. Had it towed to GM dealer and then replaced the "K Harness" again. (old one burnt out). Not covered because the 1 year warranty on the part expired.(but was covered by extended warranty).
6/6/07- One day after getting car back...it happened again. Called and raised hell. They paid to have it towed this time. The "K Harness burned out again...one day!!!).
6/7/07- The service manager decides to call GM Engineering division in Detroit and finds out that they actually solved the problem after 2003 with a redesigned Column Lock mechanism. They told him that they haven't had any problems with it on 04's, etc. He asked why they didn't share this information with the dealerships and they said the mechanism costs of $250 compared to $45 for the K Harness. He was as pissed as I was. Apparently GM wasn't real anxious to share this with us or the dealer's service people.
Has anyone else heard of this "FIX?" Or are they still trying to blow smoke up our butts????
The part # for the new mechanism is 88965331 (Lock 2.195)

They installed a "new" fix in mine a couple of weeks ago. Hopefully it'll fix it. The mech showed me almost a ream of paper he downloaded from GM's site concerning this issue. Replaced the mechanism for I think 196 for the part. Total came to about 540. Sorry I don't have the receipt with me to show the part number. When I get back to the Vette, I'll post it up.
Before anyone starts the "why don't you get a CLB and be done with it" response, I bought the car used, and it had already had been recalled at least once.
You mean the charged you for it? It should have been covered under the recall. It's GM's fault the whole mess never got fixed right in the first place. I wouldn't pay a dime of it. Call their main office and raise hell
Since they got approval to remove the locking plates on the mn6's they should do that and reset any recalled car's computers to the original setting so the fuel supply is not shut down. Forget the harness K!!!
I just started to get the service column lock message when I start the car. I asked the dealer about it and was told that the recal was done. Should I purchase the CLB to get rid of the message or what should I do to resolve this issue?

I posted this once before. The actual real fix for the column lock problem is the following: GM part #88965331 is the actuator motor. This is the good one with few failures. If you are going to use a K-harness as the relay, use GM #88952427. Personally, I used the CLB from C of H. Remove the steering wheel locking plate. Disable the fuel shut off from the PCM. In ten seconds, this message will self-destruct.
I totally agree. I find it crazy after all these years that this is still a problem. The clb has been around for a long time now. I've had it on all of my C5's that had a column lock and have never had a problem.
