I just moved to fl and ive already been door dinged. I drove 1200 miles and no damage whatsover, then the day after i arrive it happens. There is a descent sized chip (little smaller than a dime) about 5 inches below the drivers side window toward the back of the door. Ive already put touch up paint on it, so its alot less noticable but it is still noticable to me. Im really not worried about the cost i just want it completely fixed. If i get a good body shop, do you think that they can repaint it, blend it, and fix it completely? Or do you think that there will be some difference in matching no matter what?
I had some front and damage were the front fascia was actually split. I first took it to a dealer paint shop and they said they would have to paint most of the front of my car.
I then took it to a highly respected auto painter in my area and he said that he could easily fix the split and blend the paint in the front bumper cover alone. My car is now fixed and you would never know that it had been hit. My car is quicksilver and I was told by others it would be hard to match. The painter gauranteed me a perfect match or he would redo it until it did.
I'm sure they can fix you car easily if you go to the right person.
Silver is one of the more difficult colors to blend. I'm not sure I'd venture to try repairing a split bumper cover though.
If the paint on the rest of your door is nice, and depending on the color of your car, most body shops will feather/fill/prime your damaged area. Blend the basecoat (color of your car) and re-clear the entire panel. I'd venture to say it's between a $350-600 repair depending on the labor rates in your area.
[EDIT]Just noticed the car was yellow. That shouldn't be a problem to blend. [/EDIT]
the paint on the rest of the door is good. i saw a thread on here not to long ago about someone shaving there door handles and molding there break vents to the body. it was a silver car. they didnt repaint or even reclear the whole panel they just spot painted it and it all looked like it blended well. i just hope they dont have to do anything to the whole panel, including clear.

Do you own the car??
or
Does the car own you?
That is the problem with owning such nice vehicles. By the way, my cars own me.
What kind of car was parked next to you? A chip that bad almost seems intentional.
no one was there when i went in, and no one was there when i came out. it probably was out of jealousy. there is nothing but a bunch of 16 year old ricers where i live. they started revving there fart cans at me the day i moved into town so im gonna be keeping a closer eye on my car.
The 'cheap' fix it blending the panel and not clearing the whole thing. Those types of blend lines can be difficult to see but they are definitely there. A trained eye will see them.

After i bought the car i noticed a small spot on the rear bumper toward the bottom that had been fixed. the only way i noticed it was when i washed the car the water wouldnt bead on the spot. when i dried it and looked close i could se a hazy spot like it had been fixed and the clearcoat hadnt been completely blended/buffed. i took a pad and some 3m rubbing compound to it and now its perfect. i think with an experienced painter and a good amount of buffing it wont be noticable. going to the body shop in the morning for an estimate and see what they have to say. ill keep you posted.
