You might get some suggestions if you state what type of shifter you're installing the **** on and what **** (manufacturer/vendor) you're talking about. Everyone loves images, also.
The oem shifter and most after market shifters are threaded 9/16-18.
You say it won't "screw on straight"...do you mean to align the Z06 image?
Or, do you mean you can't get the threads aligned to get the **** started on the lever?
If the former, you could use a jamb nut at the base. If the latter, it might be the threads are damaged or you have the wrong threaded **** for the shifter lever...maybe the **** you have is a different SAE/metric size?

Sorry...I meant the former...I can't get the image straight...it screws on all the way down, just a 1/2 turn too much...the image alignment is off. Here is the ****

A jamb nut would probably be the easiest way to align the Z06 the way you want it. The 9/16-18 is a large fine thread and it might be difficult to find one. If you have an ACE or TRUE VALUE, go to their bulk fastener section. They have jamb nuts in the covered gray plastic boxes above the bulk fasteners.
If they don't have a jamb nut in that size you could use a regular 9/16-18 nut, but it will be thicker than a jamb nut. Just pull the boot up to cover the nut.
If you're still using the oem C5/Z06 shifter with the machined slot for the "Demon Key", you could try placing washers on top of the lever and threading the **** down.
I used a 1/4-20 thread button head allen screw inserted into the top of the machined slot as a spacer to align my HURST **** on the oem shifter lever.

Or you could put some thin shims in the bore of the shift **** to seat it correctly aligned via trial and error. That's what my MBA shift **** came with.
I have one of these on my Z and there was a little nylon ball that goes inside that is a compression fit on the top of the shaft as you screw the **** down. If yours is the same, you just hold the **** with rubber gloves or something that wont slip and turn it another 3/4 turn compressing the nylon ball. I really had to turn it hard and it wont turn either way now.
