High Stall Torque Converters
Ok.. I am starting to plan my Fall and Winter Mods… one that is on the top is gears (3.73s or 3.42s – to be determined) and a torque converter. In “the day” when I was young and building street cars, I drove a big block rat motor with a high stall converter and 4.11s. I am trying to pull those damaged brain cells up from the 1970s but I am finding some alcohol caused holes … or completely dead cells that have no hope or revival.
Here is my question. In a recent thread, which I thought was very interesting. Mike Mercury said in his posting that a STR truck converter would provide a high stall than a factor C5 converter. I too like he stated in his thread don’t have an unlimited tire budget and want to keep it street drivable seeing I drive it everyday. Here is the link to the thread… http://forums.corvetteforum.com/show....php?t=1715694
My question is to you guys and gals that have a higher then normal torque converter.
1. Is my understanding that all torque converters “lock-up” and a preset speed corect. Once they do, it does not matter if it is a 2000 RPM stall or a 4000 RPM stall they are the same.
2. Second, what is a stock C5 converter rated at… 1400 RPM or so?
3. How does a higher converter 2500 – 2800 RPM drive on a day to day basis? When you take off at a normal speed is it “soft” or feel as if it is slipping until it locks up?
Anyway, feed back would be great to help point me in the correct direction and stall speed. I am interested in the “driving experience” good and bad with a higher than stock torque converter.
I remember the results clearly of how they perform when you are using them for their intended purpose and THAT I LIKE!!!!!
Thanks
2 I've read here they were anywhere between a 1600 - 1900 stall.
3 I had a 2800 stall TC and I didn't like it. Felt like a constantly slipping clutch. Great for drag racing but in town it was awful.
I'm actually going to go with the low stall GM truck unit as posted by MM. I need a slightly higher stall unit to make my baby cam feel more comfortable starting and stopping.
Hope that helps.
